If you live long enough, you're going to get sick. The key is to have enough healthy people in the risk pool to offset the costs of the sick.

So...basically, take the impoverished third world country approach to life.

no, if you can afford to save them, then you should obviously. I don't think insurance should be stuck with the bill though.

Google insurance, genius.

Never mind, I did it for you.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Health_insurance

Health insurance is insurance that covers the whole or a part of the risk of a person incurring medical expenses, spreading the risk over a large number of persons. By estimating the overall risk of health care and health system expenses over the risk pool, an insurer can develop a routine finance structure, such as a monthly premium or payroll tax, to provide the money to pay for the health care benefits specified in the insurance agreement.[1] The benefit is administered by a central organization such as a government agency, private business, or not-for-profit entity. According to the Health Insurance Association of America, health insurance is defined as "coverage that provides for the payments of benefits as a result of sickness or injury. It includes insurance for losses from accident, medical expense, disability, or accidental death and dismemberment"

Class dismissed. You can go back to playing World of Warcraft now, at least until your mom gets your dinner ready.

If people had to pay that amount ... the price would go DOWN.

Because no one would be able to pay.

Clinics would be pitted against each other via price .... the price would go DOWN.

Competition drives lower prices.

Insurance companies ensure that there is ZERO transparency for pricing. No one will ever know how much something *really* costs.

1. My dentist looks at what he thinks the insurer will pay and then marks UP his claim to ensure that whatever percentage the insurer will pay will be covered. For example, it costs him $100. Insurance will pay 50%. So he submits a claim of $200.

Multiply that by patients x different insurers x different plans.

2. Some insurers just cut rates for different treatments within certain facilities.

No one knows what anything really costs. It's all driven by individual insurance plans.

but you can't profit off some unhealthy baby, so why should the company take on the risk? plus if everyone is actually paying, the price will go down.

No disease bankrupts people.

The choice to spend "whatever money it takes" to cure the disease is what bankrupts people, and even then only those people who left the financial preparation for catastrophic events up to the whims of fate and/or the promise that their neighbor will be billed.

Everyone dies. It's a basic biological fact of life. Your neighbor is not enslaved to the notion that you are owed a specific amount of time on this Earth. First unfair fact of life - not everyone lives to be the same age.
