How many of the mass shooters we've seen in the last 30-plus years, were on drugs that were supposed to calm them, make them happy, etc?
Apparently a lot of them were. And some of the manufacturers say that occasionally those drugs can produce "mania", a dangerous tendency to commit violence, harm others etc.
Could this have had some effect on Adam Lanza, Nikolas Cruz and others?
He [shooter Nikolas Cruz] and his brother were adopted when they were young by Lynda and Roger Cruz, of Long Island, New York, according to relatives. They raised the boys in Parkland.
Roger Cruz died over a decade ago and Lynda struggled with the boys, said Barbara Kumbatovich, a former sister-in-law. “She did the best she could. They were adopted and had some emotional issues,” she said.
Kumbatovich said she believed Nikolas Cruz was on medication to deal with his emotional fragility. “She was struggling with Nikolas the last couple years,” she said.
Adam Lanza declined all meds. Had he been medicated he might no have rampaged on the Sandy Hook School and he and his mother might be alive.
Paddock's autopsy showed a trace of low dose generic Valium in his urin although his blood was clean. He was not Under the influence of any substance when he rampaged on the concert in Las Vegas.
Cruz's toxology panels are still being processed. It is unknown if he was medicated.
The ratio of medicated mass shooters : the overal population in the US is statistically insignificant.
Usage of SSRIs and other mood altering medications has been growing by leaps and bounds throughout the developed world yet mass shootings are a fraction of what they are in the US.
I avoid all mood altering substance and have no horse in this race- no reason to defend Big Pharma. There should be no surprise that people with mental disorders are usually prescribed medications to manage symptoms.
Can mass shooting be differentiated from other forms of intentional violence, other than by scale?
It might be possible than these drugs manifest undesirable side effects involving harm against others, in less obvious ways
All drugs have warnings so the company doesn't have a lawsuit. Many drugs say there is a risk of depression or suicide. It's not the drugs though because they were obviously having problems before they saw a psychiatrist
Have not come across anything to suggest or confirm this shooter was prescribed mood altering medications prior to the shooting and his arrest.
He had a brief history of alcohol abuse and cocain usage which he quit years before his rampage He was considered a " pot head" by people who knew him. Most people who use marijuana do not become mass shooters.
SSRIs were not on the market until the late 1980s and not in widespread use until the 90s. Soon after, school and other mass shootings literally exploded in frequency.
^ implies SSRIs cause some to become mass shooters. If true, the rest of the developed world would be experiencing similar rates of mass shootings.
Can’t really make a conclusion out of it. Troubled people can do troubling things. Some of the more troubled people are on medication but they still had issues to begin with.
Could it also be true that the type of weapons apparently so easily available to the likes of Adam Lanza and Cruz today were less readily available to people back in the 1950’s?
And those subsequently prescribed mood altering medications would have their firearms confiscated?
This would seriously infringe on millions of people's rights, don't you think?
We are not talking about LSD lol
