I get Trump is only joking, but it’s still concerning when someone with his position and authority makes that sort of joke. The office of the president deserves more respect then that.

No. You'd probably be freaking the hell out if that happened to you. A "joke" is not the first thing on your mind.
You need to listen to the clip of Trump making the joke. People were laughing.. it was very obviously a joke. It was Trump's backhanded way of criticizing Xi, and rather than supporting his criticism of Xi, the media criticizes Trump.
