I think it's culture clash also a separate thing from religion and skin color. Culture includes different languages also. The Tower of Babel comes to mind. Some immigrants and even some citizens are adamant about speaking their native tongue out in public even if they know English. Doesn't make for unity or comprehensiveness. Not sure if this creates violence but rather divisiveness.
If you look at the 5 most dangerous countries in the world (Colombia, Yemen, El Salvador, Pakistan and Nigeria), with the arguable exception of Pakistan, they are less diverse than the U.S but with higher levels of violence.
What they also have in common is high levels of poverty.
Therefore, I would consider poverty to be a bigger driving factor as a contributor to crime, than multiculturalism.

But I have always wondered why places like North Dakota and Japan which have many Monocultural elements have so few social issues compared to other places

Maybe the violence just comes natural for some folks? Maybe they have no business in our society.
People always find reasons to hate each other. If it's not religion, it's skin color. If it's not skin color, it's where you came from or how you speak. They'll always find some reason to kill each other. Look at Africa. There is zero diversity there.
