NK has promised every president in recent memory that he would denuclearize. They even took some steps in that direction in the past. But it never happens in the end. Why would Kim do that? When the Kim dynasty talks about denuclearizing the Korean peninsula they mean the exit of US troops as well as any actions that they might take. Trump took a big step toward the US leaving by giving up military exercises that bother Kim. He got nothing in return of course, but a photo op. Appeasement is all this is and while you might get a peace prize for that, it will not, in the end, lead to peace.
[From the joint statement of Trump and Kim:]
Quote:
Convinced that the establishment of new U.S.-DPRK relations will contribute to the peace and prosperity of the Korean Peninsula and of the world, and recognizing that mutual confidence building can promote the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula [emphasis added], President Trump and Chairman Kim Jong Un state the following:
1. The United States and the DPRK commit to establish new U.S.-DPRK relations in accordance with the desire of the peoples of the two countries for peace and prosperity.
2. The United States and the DPRK will join their efforts to build a lasting and stable peace regime on the Korean Peninsula.
3. Reaffirming the April 27, 2018 Panmunjom Declaration, the DPRK commits to work towards complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.
Look at the joint statement. Take note of the phrase "mutual confidence building." If we want Kim to give up his nukes, we have to give him something that he wants in return. It's just that simple. Cancelling a single military exercise is a gesture of confidence building. What we get in return is a commitment to "work towards complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula." Baby steps, on both sides, but hopefully steps that will lead to the desired end goal of a peaceful, prosperous, nuclear-free Korean Peninsula.
Clearly it remains to be seen what will come of all this. But personally, I think this is a MAJOR step forward. It's certainly better than launching missiles and threatening to wreak nuclear havoc.
Hopefully! I'd much rather see a NK more similar to China than the past dictator style oppressor with a chip on his shoulder from a war never finished. So let's hope it's huge for both of us and it leads to a much better future for everyone, most importantly relieving some stress for South Korea. They bare the brunt of our bad relationship after all.
It's taken 70 years to wrap it up. Thanks to Trump, we finally have a chance to see some of the axes of evil unravel. Let's look forward to that instead of hating Trump today. There is plenty of time for you to hate later. Gobs!
China wants to see NK remain the same. It is in their interest. Why do you think China is already removing it's sanctions? A lifeline to Kim is all this summit accomplished.
China is thrilled with this deal. China hated those military exercises and Trump gave them up with getting nothing in return.
So live in your fantasy. China loves the status quo and has no intention of changing it as long as it could help it.
