So by your standards, he was also the darling of the George W Bush administration since that was who originally appointed him. But neither of them asked him to be the head of the VA

Seems like most of the trouble comes from obama holdovers. Now that they are with Trump, people are suddenly poking into these peoples backgrounds when no one bothered to do so before.

It wasn't merely "social drinking," people reported to the committee that he got so drunk he couldn't do his job as the President's physician. "Repeatedly drunk on duty."
Also, some twenty people reported that he would go down the aisle of the plane handing out prescription sleep medications and later prescription wake-up medications. Apparently, he was known as the "Candy Man" for this.
