The Rust Belt is the way it is because too many ordinary people expect to be treated like actual human beings at work. And that’s probably going to be true until a new generation of willing slaves is born in the Rust Belt.
Cute story. Got anything to back that up? What do you call the people that actually are working and producing in the majority of this country? The rust belt is what it is for several reasons. Partly political-taxes, excess regulations, etc. Partly environmental-it costs a lot to heat factories in snow country, and transportation is spotty due to snow (granted at specific times). The real question-why WOULD any company that actually produces a product invest in the rust belt?

They wouldn’t. Labor costs are too high.

Why hire someone from the Rust Belt when they can hire someone from the Third World (China, Mexico, Mississippi) to do the same job for half the wage?

It is what it is. I don’t like it, but business is business.

The “good” news is, the Rust Belt is fast becoming like the Third World, so eventually the factories will start coming back (while paying 5 cents a day).

Isn't there a motto in Alabama or Louisiana - "Thank God for Mississippi!"

Labor is only ONE component of costs. There are many other factors. Electricity, and energy, taxes, materials, facility costs (land and building or rent), transportation to market, etc. However, the labor market has free will. Nobody is forced to accept a job, or wage they don't want. Don't like the wage? Move where there are better wages, or acquire skills that pay better.

That was the NUMMI plant (a Toyota GM joint venture) in Fremont, CA. The recession (and GM's bankruptcy filing) gave Toyota the impetus to close that plant - overall declining demand in a slumping economy also was a factor. It is now Tesla Motors' assembly facility, though of course employing far fewer workers.

Lol!

Tell that to the millions of sweatshop workers in China, Latin America, and elsewhere.

“Yeah, just get a better job or sign up for community college.”

Clearly, Big Business does not own them!
Well, maybe business realizes that endorsing bigotry is bad for the bottom line. Remember Mike Pence as governor of Indiana got behind trashing LGBT people and companies like Eli Lilly told him that was going to hurt the state's economy.

As a sign of the changing times, a former Miss Alabama and Miss America just got married to her wife. In Alabama. She's a OB-GYN in Birmingham.

So you can either join the 21 century today or wallow in your feudal attitudes and be left behind.

Or we could endorse your futile attitudes.
1. 40% of all workers in LA County (10.2 million people) are working for cash; and not paying taxes. This is because they are predominantly illegal immigrants, working without a green card. (Donald Trump was right)
2. 95% of warrants for murder in Los Angeles are for illegal aliens.
3. 75% of people on the most wanted list in Los Angeles are illegal aliens.
4. Over 2/3 of all births in Los Angeles County are to illegal alien Mexicans on Medi-Cal, whose births were paid for by taxpayers.

5. Nearly 35% of all inmates in California detention centers are Mexican nationals; they are here illegally.
6. Over 300,000 illegal aliens in Los Angeles County are living in garages.
7. The FBI reports half of all gang members in Los Angeles are most likely illegal aliens from south of the border.
8. Nearly 60% of all occupants of HUD properties are illegal.
9. 21 radio stations in LA are Spanish- speaking.

And since we got the plant and you didn't, I guess we're doing OK.

The “good” news is, the Rust Belt is fast becoming like the Third World, so eventually the factories will start coming back (while paying 5 cents a day).
One must remember a couple things - as to why the rust belt became the rust belt. These factors are largely in the rear view mirror now....

1. Low cost immigrant labor - Read "The Jungle" or any book about the midwest...slavs, poles and blacks from the south flocked there (in the case of blacks, it was due to the trains which went in that direction). Many of the workers in Detroit were "scotch-irish" from the Mts of the mid-south escaping and looking for ANY work.

2. Raw Materials and Transportation - Iron from the Mesabi range was transported over the great lakes - coal was also shipped via RR to Pittsburgh (to be "coked" for steel and founderies, Gary and other places to be easy transported by boat, barge and RR to the entire area.

Now, transportation has become a very small part of the equation. I can import a container from Europe or China cheaper than I can get a semi-trailer load of goods across the USA (or about the same price).

3. Skills - leaned FROM the industries in many cases - tool and die makers and other mechanics were often Germans and other nationalities with a background in these trades....others were needed and learned on the shop floor. Today, CNC processes mean a LOT fewer machinists are needed.

Today, many companies specialize in logistics and can make sure your parts (for any factory) all arrive perfectly in sync...wherever the factory is located. Many additional countries have the skills to make complex products. Business has gotten so streamlined that there are ever countries (Germany, especially) who will build factories for you anywhere in the world...turn the key and it will produce just about anything.

We live in a constantly changing world and only a fool would think it is going to go back to the $60+ dollar per hour (with benefits) factory worker. Sure, they exist in Germany but that's a matter of tradition and caring about your society. America is for sale to the lowest bidder...

There are things we can do to mitigate this - but it's not tariffs or a tiny addition to one plant. It's more a matter of cutting down on the Security State and Health Care Capitalism which are driving us broke. Between the two and the debt on the money borrowed to pay them off, it's in the realm of 5 TRILLION per year. Since Gubment pays most of the cost of both, that means those two things alone account for vastly more than all the income taxes we pay - which are less than 2 Trillion.

It's not very hard for those schooled in basic math to see that we are being SCREWED and that there is no way we can "pay our way" given the current Congress and Admin.
