That's happened to me a few times, once on a 16 hour flight. I try to avoid the middle seat if possible for that reason.
Me too, especially after that happened. I often fly Dubai to Seattle on Emirates which is about a 14-15 hour flight and try first to get a reasonable Business Class seat, if not, exit row.
Those are very expensive solutions though. So many people are so fat, yet airline don't offer extra-wide economy class seats. Why not?? Why not make large, no-frills seats available at a moderately higher price?
This is insanity. Let’s just all accept obesity and expect airlines to accommodate obesity by building larger seats? Obesity is a national epidemic, not something to be normalized by society. If you choose to be obese, and yes, it is a choice, purchase two seats or a business class seat. But no one in coach should be expected to have to sit next to someone who cannot keep their body in one seat without touching the person next to them.

Obesity doesn't care whether you accept it or not. It's here and it isn't going away. You can change your personal obesity (maybe) but there's not a damn thing anyone can do about the general state of obesity in America and elsewhere.

Instead of "should be", why not deal with reality? The world is fat and needs bigger seats.

No, airlines should take responsibility for enforcing "one seat, one body" and giving obese folks a choice; purchase two seats on the next available flight when the cabin crew sees that the individual is too large to confine themselves to one seat or, you don't fly. It's no different than smoking. Smokers use to share their smoke with anyone nearby but laws were passed to solve that. Why should I pay higher prices for planes to make larger seats? I shouldn't. This whole notion about society "fat shaming' others and celebrating our differences is ludicrous. If someone chooses to be obese, fine, that is their decision. But they need to take responsibility for consequences, not the person sitting next to them.

Too late. Obesity is not touted as a disease by none other than Uncle Sam.
Could they just place a big fat person between two skinny-minnies?
We live in a world of fat people. We could just force them to take the bus or a livestock trailer or train and such, but we are a compassionate race.
The skinny people really don't use their whole seat.
They can scootch over a little.
Oh, hell no. That's skinny person discrimination. Don't you dare take some of my seat that I paid for just because I don't fill it. And, no, I'm not compassionate when it comes to this. I don't want some stranger's body squashed all over mine.
Its a safety hazard as well. If someone is too big to fit in their assigned seat, they are likely too big to be able to get out of it quickly and easily in an emergency. You can take those risks with your own lives, but not force it upon others.
I doubt it was merely because she was fat and black. A more likely scenario is the overweight passenger in the narrow seat spilled over onto the other passenger. When asked by the other passenger to stay on her side the larger passenger got angry and belligerent (yelling and threatening) making the smaller passenger feel threatened. That behavior, rather than obesity and skin color, is what led to the cops being called.
I think this was the case. However, it would be nice if we could get a video of the full event to see if it was really a race issue, which I doubt was the case.
Most people who are "fat", "overweight", or "obese" are that because they are/were not taking better care of themselves. There are also many who have medical conditions or perhaps even medicinal side effects that lead to or help induce such a condition. That said, I don't know why this fat Black lady is fat.
Let's say that the events did happen the way or similar to what victimofGM described. Why might a fat person choose to pull the racist/sexist/cards rather than accept responsibility?

Because the race card is easy and scares people and companies , especially if a company needs good PR to compete.
