Communism was never popular outside of some corners of academia.
Where it existed and exists it was imposed in an authoritarian manner. Was never implemented or sustained by the will of any people.
To a large extent it existed in relatively modern day Israel. Kibbutz and all that. Much of that is gone now, but many industries and practices arose from it and are still used today.
Most anything has to be imposed in an authoritarian manner...as many here will remind us, even our taxes here are collected at either the "point of a gun" or with threat of jail or losing your house or property.
Left to their own devices, you have Somalia.
Also, in many ways religion is/was communism or socialism of a sort. Mormons flocked together and I doubt any starved, even those disabled and poor. Same goes for many other religious communities.
One needs to always keep an open mind. In 500 years I imagine (or at least hope) that we may find more of a balance of how to do things. It's fairly obvious (at least to me) that our system in the USA doesn't work for ALL the people (General Welfare, Happiness of the People). Too much pain, depression, suicide, disease and general unhappiness (by most measures)....
I think some of the Scandinavian countries are rated the happiest on earth. Their system is closer to what we might call "Democratic Socialism" which is probably 1/2 way between the Communist Ideals and the Wall Street ones.
Democratic socialism is the best system there is..
Private industry owns the means of production.
With a
Social safety net to provide for all, in a cost effective manner without putting profit before lives.

Not true at all. They are higher up the freedom scale than we are.

Its because they are small nation states with a culture bred to survive the winter. Just slapping on a political system will not get these results.
What’s really scary is how brainwashed people are that they keep voting for it regardless of how bad it’s failing. Primarily because it’s taught like a religion in their schools. Like what you see in Venezuela. 2/3rds of the population still worships Chavez and Maduro just got re-elected while they’re all starving to death.
t to give an example
Communist countries fail mainly because of sanctions, boycotts and sabotages. Corruption is not something that belongs only to communist countries, just look at argentina. And stop repeating propaganda, most people are not starving in venezuela, undoubtedly there are food shortages, but it's not what most news lead you to believe.

I agree, there needs to be a balance. Private industries and capital is necessary for economic development; however, like the bible says, we don't live only of bread. Everyone need education, a decent health system, etc., not just those who have a lot of money. A short look at modern pop music shows how business has destroy all the remaining art in it.
Another example, in findland there are no privates schools. The rich have to go to school with the rest of people, they have the same opportunities.
People who only support the capitalistic side think having a small group of extremely rich people, and masses of poor is how we are supposed to live. On the other side, having an only communist side is wrong for obvious reasons. I won't repeat it since that's the only thing people actually talk about.
How about a more balance world in which not only economic development is encouraged, but also human development. Oh no, that might cut in people's profit margin!
The Soviet Union sure as hell in no way ever practiced what they preached. The vast majority of people were little better than poor peasants while those in the politburo and at the top greatly enjoyed wealth, fame, prestige; the likes of which the vast majority could never hope to achieve. Did those at the top honestly not see how massively evil hypocritical they were?
Of course they understood the hypocrisy. Thats why its called propaganda. "Socialism" and "Democracy" were labels they used to appeal to the masses and the working class. Just like North Korea also calls itself "Democratic". We should see it for what it is. Propaganda.
Are you talking about "Communism" in the context of American politics, or the original Marxism?
Communism aims at eliminating classes and exploitation, which was very progressive in the 1800s. It still inspires some people of today.
Nowadays few people like the idea of class warfare, but all government does something to constrain "exploitation".
The major problem is that every individual has free wills, and not everyone wants "play his role". Communism does not give a good solution to it.
