Seems Manafort used Cypriot accounts to avoid paying US taxes.
What are the odds these accounts were running through the Bank of Cyprus that Wilbur Ross (Trump'sSecretary of Commerce) was involved with?/

No wonder Mueller needed more white boards to track this mess.
I don't pretend to know how this trial will turn out, but the turning point of it is going to be the defense's cross examination of Gates. They are going to go after him as aggressively as any of us have probably ever seen in a trial like this.
Will that be enough? I do not know. But it should be kept in mind that the prosecution has to prove INTENT to defraud in order for Manafort to be convicted. Which is a pretty high bar, especially when these fraudulent actions were apparently all carried out by Rick Gates, and not Paul Manafort
I am getting the impression that the September case against Manafort is more likely to result in a conviction than this one is, but we will see soon enough.
The cross-examination will consist mainly of "You're a criminal and you'd say anything to stay out of jail, wouldn't you Mr. Gates?"
But there's still a lot of evidence from the accountant and emails, etc. that the jury will be looking at.
Regarding intent, it's difficult to see how Manafort could claim he forgot to report the income.
In any case, you're right that no one can predict the outcome at this point. But I'd say it's not looking very good for Manafort right now.
The new allegations revolve around an attempt to get a loan in which Mr Manafort was told by the banks that he did not have an adequate income to support the loan he was seeking.
In order to increase that income, Mr Gates said that he and Mr Manafort agreed to have a company Mr Manafort owned forgive a loan that had been made to Mr Manafort. https://www.independent.co.uk/news/w...-a8480851.html
"We need to discuss Steve Calk for Sec of Army," Manafort wrote to Gates on Nov. 24, 2016. He signed the email as "P."
Manafort emailed Gates again two days before Christmas in 2016. Manafort told Gates he had attached contact information for various people he wanted to go to Trump's inauguration. That list included Calk and his son.
After the witness from yesterday, I think it might be a slam dunk against Manafort.
Today is going worse. They have emails. It's pretty damning. I may have to open a good bottle...
