I posted a couple of tweets about this last night - it's escalated today.

Why Saudi Arabia is waging diplomatic war on … Canada |VOX

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) is pretty upset with Canada.
Upset enough to give the Canadians in KSA 24 hour to leave the country.
Upset enough to recall all Saudis that are in Canada
Upset enough to cancel all Trade and everything else with Canada
Upset enough to pull 16,000 Saudi Student out of Canada
Upset enough to stop all Air Travel between KSA and Canada by August 13.

I'm still searching out articles ........ but that is all Pretty Upset. Canada seems puzzled about the entire thing.

This article is pro-Canada and it appears the Saudi King/Crown Prince took great exception to Canadian FM Freeland tweeting about what the KSA must do "immediately".

The Saudis consider that "interference" -- seems like overkill, I suspect something else in going on.

I didn't even need to read the article to know that Canada was 100% in the right, and Saudi Arabian leaders were doing something nuts.

Wow.

Any country that manages to antagonize Canada of all countries is way out there.

Things like this is why I'd never visit Saudi Arabia, regardless of how "stable" it's reputed to be.

On Twitter, a Saudi government account threatened Canada with a 9/11 type attack complete with a graphic of a low flying airliner flying towards the Toronto skyline..

"Amarnath Amarasingnam, a senior research fellow at the Institute for Strategic Dialogue, said it is difficult to say but the organization [infographics_KSA] seems to be connected to the Saudi media ministry.

He said that it "seems to exist solely to turn Saudi government press releases into pretty infographics for social media."

You are correct - turns out that Canada actually considers this "spat" a good thing and good politically.

Saudi Blowback Over Women's Rights Gives Trudeau a Boost |Bloomberg - 8/6/18

Justin Trudeau’s attempts to export his “sunny” progressive ways have hit another roadblock, this time with Saudi Arabia. Yet unlike in recent spats with China and India, Canada’s prime minister may get a slight boost at home for his support of women’s rights.

Trudeau’s sunny persona and “progressive” agenda, which propelled him to global rockstar status in an era of populist backlash, have found few takers abroad. In his India trip this year, he was dogged by questions of whether his government was too sympathetic toward Sikh separatists. And Trudeau rankled China with a push to adopt provisions on trade like labor, gender and environmental guarantees.

While these global clashes have at times eroded Trudeau’s popularity at home, the standoff with Saudi Arabia is unlikely to have much lasting impact. It may even shore up support for his Liberal Party, which is neck and neck in most polls with the opposition Conservatives ahead of 2019 elections.

Perhaps it was a very cleverly planned Diplomatic Move by FM Freeland and Trudeau.

They pulled back on the 9/11 attack sort of thing, and have quite clearly indicated that was not their intent at all, and that instead it was meant to represent them sending the Canadian ambassador back. Given the context I find this 100% believable.

But yeah this is blowing up in ways that are surprising.

FM Freeland spoke at a press conference today - Double Down Time.

Chrystia Freeland: Feds waiting on Saudi Arabia’s next moves amid diplomatic spat |The Provice. CA

Speaking to reporters in Vancouver on Monday, Freeland said Canada is “very comfortable” with its position that led to the new measures announced by Saudi Arabia.

“We are always going to speak up for human rights, we are always going to speak up for women’s rights and that is not going to change,” Freeland said.

Saudi Arabia’s move to freeze new trade deals could threaten Canada’s $15-billion arms deal that includes providing armoured vehicles to the country, but Freeland called it “premature” to comment on the status of the deal, or the economic consequences of the move.

Losing the $15 Billion dollar tank deal is probably fine - many Canadians protested aganst that and in the long run ..... $15 Billion won't matter. The 16,000 Students being pulled out of Canada - who knows. Some might want them gone, some might think losing 16,000 students (and their money) in a 10 day period could impact an economy.

Good News is that Canada doesn't consider this any type of "crisis" & it's even a Good Thing politically
..... which makes me wonder why American Leftists like Susan Rice DO think it's a "crisis" and are demanding that the US State Department and President Trump "fix" it. The US State Department has announced that they are not involved and don't intend to get involved.

May be more to learn about all this ........

That tweet was WAAAY over the top -- I'm guessing the young men that did that are not "comfortable" tonight. The entire thing is "surprising" .... I've studied these folks for a long time.

This whole thing is pretty unusual - as is the other Arab Nations backing the KSA actions.
Typically they do some sort of 'insult' thing like refuse to see a delegation or let the US Secretary of State wait and then refuse an audience (they did this to Hillary Clinton).

It's rare to immediately expel displomats (24 hours to leave the Country) - stop flights, stop trade and pull Saudi Students (16,000 of them) immediately out of a Country.

OK - turns out those students were going to be reporting to school in 2 weeks - so it's a cancellation - not pulling them out.
