It wouldn’t be an appropriate empty gesture, if liberals actually tried to follow through with it. Instead, whining about how evil America is during their time of leisure on the internet is much easier.

Bonus points for liberals advocating more illegals to suffer with us in this brutal 3rd world country dictatorship to escape that very prosperous highly developed nation south of the border.

Don't copy Canada's system. Design one that is better suited to your needs. You've got the advantage of a clean slate to start with. Getting rid of the insurance shylocks is step one but maintaining a system of tier level optional top-up insurance for those who demand concierge type services from specialist hospitals could be one example of things you'd like so you can maintain your current have and have not "class" structure.
Actually it’s not about preserving the “have and have nots”, as much as it’s about preserving private enterprise (billions worth of stocks that we have invested into). The biggest problem I see switching to single payer is what happens to those investors? the people who work at the insurance companies? Really I am deeply concerned about the economic shock and the immediate loss and unemployment that will likely occur.

I do think however that Congress should create a non partisan panel of experts on healthcare, people from single payer countries, industry experts and even healthcare providers. These people should study the feasibility of saving Obamacare, study single payer models and make some conclusions on which system gets us more for our money. This panel could also plan for the ramifications of the elimination of the health insurance industry and how to blunt the effects of the loss.

A non partisan group crunching numbers and analyzing outcomes has a far better chance of creating solutions than does partisan congressmen do. A non partisan study also has a far better chance of convincing a conservative republican like me of agreeing to single payer than does a liberal congressman. I will listen to facts but no one seems to present the case logically. Neither side presents anything but partisan rhetoric. I have zero faith in the politicians. One of my gravest reservations about single payer isn’t the socialist aspect of it but simply a lack of faith in our government to manage such a thing. Canada, the UK, Germany and Japan are often cited as examples of how we should be but they actually have competent government that has earned the trust of the people. Our government is corrupt and prone to abusing its power. Our current leadership is one of the best examples in history. Massive internal corruption from the White House is in the news daily, the democrats have been using law enforcement to influence elections on the other side........you can see why we have no faith in them. Like I admitted before I am at a loss for what should be done. I would like real answers from a group of people who do know.

Canada does have the benefits of a merit based immigration program and a secure southern border that is paid for by the crime-filled cesspool to the south.

For those of you who are opposed to universal healthcare, why do you support universal police and fire protection?

Well easier than supporting universal healthcare, but I support states rights over anything else and there are some thing that should not be universal. You can not compare health care with police protection for heaven's sake.
