The Governor of California just signed SB10 , eliminating bail in California .

Now you are free to commit a crime and not have to be worried about those pesky bail amounts .
This is supposed to help “poor people “ . Maybe people shouldn’t commit crime if they can’t afford bail ? Too common sense and logical an idea for California politicians .

Gov. Jerry Brown on Tuesday signed sweeping legislation to eliminate cash bail in California. The change, which will take effect in October 2019, goes further than any other state in the country to remove money from pretrial detention.

“Today, California reforms its bail system so that rich and poor alike are treated fairly,” Brown said in a statement.

Under Senate Bill 10, California will replace bail with “risk assessments” of individuals and non-monetary conditions of release. Counties will establish local agencies to evaluate any individual arrested on felony charges for their likelihood of returning for court hearings and their chances of rearrest.

Advocates of abolishing bail contend that too many defendants remain stuck in custody because they cannot afford to bail out, effectively creating unequal justice based on wealth. California is at the forefront of a national campaign to end money bail that has also recently seen states like New Jersey and New Mexico adopt polices to circumvent the for-profit bail industry, though none had yet eliminated bail completely.

Yep 7,000 jobs killed

“David Quintana, a lobbyist for the California Bail Agents Association, said the new law would lead to those accused of crimes skipping out on their court dates while eliminating 7,000 jobs in the cash-bail industry.

Some critics of the current system also opposed the bill.”

Good, bail bondsmen are just loan sharks, and the US is the only country in the world with a private for-profit bail system.

Good.

I always knew the bail bond system is a racket.

Next, get rid of the impounding/towling your car scam.

Sooo by not requiring bail that some criminals cannot afford that means the state does not have to pay to keep them locked up.

What is next for California reducing costs further by not arresting anyone?

The cops would still catch criminals and give them a stern talking to before letting them go but not too stern because someone might think they are being unfairly targeted and turn around and sue the state.

No bail for criminals ? Yet another reason NOT to visit California.

When Bail Feels Less Like Freedom, More Like Extortion
As bail has grown into a $2 billion industry, bond agents have become the payday lenders of the criminal justice world, offering quick relief to desperate customer

When clients cannot afford to pay the bond company’s fee to get them out, bond agents simply loan them the money, allowing them to go on a payment plan.

The bond agent takes a fee in exchange for guaranteeing the amount of the bail on the defendant’s behalf. But the fee — or premium — usually about 10 percent, is too high for many defendants, the vast majority of whom are poor. So they arrange a payment plan. The debt, paid over weeks or months of installments, can outlast the criminal case.

The arrangement can include steep late fees or require signing over collateral worth many times what is owed. And while defendants, or the family members and friends who often shoulder the costs, typically pay no interest as long as their payments are on time, if they go into default they can trigger annual interest rates as high as 30 percent.
