COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — The largest city named for Christopher Columbus has called off its observance of the divisive holiday that honors the explorer, making a savvy move to tie the switch to a politically safe demographic: veterans.

Ohio's capital city, population 860,000, will be open for business Monday after observing Columbus Day probably "for as long as it had been in existence," said Robin Davis, a spokeswoman for Democratic Mayor Andrew Ginther. City offices will close instead on Veterans Day, which falls on Nov. 12 this year.

This is why I love the State. SMH. Damn, the irony is thick.

Columbus was a slave-trader, pillager, and plunderer. His victims were non-whites so we must be sensitive to that marginalized group (Indians). We won't honor him.

Instead, let's honor the folks who have carried out our nefarious agenda of killing brown-skinned innocents in Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Yemen, Somalia, etc.

Hysterical.

It's because the city is now perpetually ran by Democrats because there so much diversity in the city who vote for them. So you get destruction of tradition like honoring Columbus day in a city named after said explorer.

I don't give a crap about how supposedly bad Columbus was. He was a man of his time and no one else today was in his shoes and circumstance. He was celebrated for his discovery. So tearing down American tradition and stealing the country away today makes Democrats better than Columbus was lol?

All city, state, federal offices in Columbus Ohio are closed Monday October 8.
Also banks, schools, colleges.

I'm pretty sure he must have copped a feel when he was 17. You should demand an investigation.

They are now doing it with the Founding Fathers. You can't apply today's standards to ones hundreds of years ago. The world was different, people were different, and they accepted different things. Oooohhh, George Washington owned slaves. Ban him! LOL! So did just about all the other large land owners. Ban the world before 1964 then.

See post 6 here for a detailed listing of Columbus Day closures in Columbus, OH. City public schools apparently were never scheduled to be closed. Last week, the City of Columbus in a curt press release announced that city offices would remain open on Oct. 8 as the city no longer would celebrate Columbus Day as an official holiday. Federal and Ohio state offices are closed, as Columbus Day remains an official federal and Ohio state holiday.
