I agree that the constant punting on immigration was a big part of the problem. For years, all sides agreed it was a big issue but could never agree on what to do about it. So they just talked big and did nothing.
Same thing with trade. It was always clear that there would be some benefits with globalization but there would also be some losses, and instead of getting in front of that to find solutions for the people getting screwed polticians just ignored it.
When you don't get out in front of an issue, eventually it takes on a life of it's own.
The next up? Social Security.
To me it's a big flaw in our political system. If a problem requires potentially unpopular solutions (or solutions that migh **** off big donors), there is no incentive for politicans to tackle it, because they want to be reelected. So they avoid and/or find sellable talking points that have nothing to do with a viable fix, but will win them votes.
