A Green Beret killed a Taliban bomb maker, I believe, in 2011. Five years after imposing minor discipline, to quote the above-referenced NY Times article, "(t)he Army opened a second investigation in late 2016, and charged Major Golsteyn with murder last week." President Trump, the Commander-in-Chief, to his credit is standing with his troops, and may intervene, while the Times whines:
I guess the Times cares more about a Talib than a Yank.
You (and I) can only speculate as to why the Army determined this was an improper killing. It sounds as if this wasn't a battle killing, but more of an assassination. If that is the case, whether he is a decorated Green Beret or not, he is not above the law, and we are a nation of laws. War crimes can not be tolerated, regardless.
I realize it is easy for us to say "Green Beret good, Taliban guy bad", but there must be more to this than we know, otherwise, the Army would not have reopened the investigation. They are not out to get their own.
But, I realize also that you prefer to put your slant on it that the NYT is more worried about the Taliban than the Army guy, however, all they are doing is reporting what they know.
But Major Golsteyn and another American soldier, concerned that the man, if released, would kill American troops or report that the tribal leader was working with the Americans, took him off the base, shot and killed him, and buried his remains in a shallow grave, the documents say.

Because he is always campaigning. Beret good, Taliban bad is a vote getter.

Trump is in survival mode right now, looking for any shred of something to replace the bad news about him that is coming out every day. He would be out kissing babies and helping Nuns cross the street if he thought it would help.
