As someone that loves Empire, I've been wondering if there is a possibility that Jussie actually thinks of himself as a Lyon. As Cookie and Lucious' son he has grown up in the ghetto streets of Philly and then as a privileged son of the founders of a music empire. Jamal has witnessed the conniving ways of both his mother and father. He has knowledge of crimes his parents and brothers have committed and gotten away with. (Well except for Cookie who did time for taking the fall for selling drugs and did jail time but, that's another story.) There has been theft, greed, fraud, manipulation and murder all committed at one time or another by various members of the Lyon clan and the all have mostly gotten away with it, all in the name getting what they want.
If he truly thinks real life is like that of the Lyons he just may have seen no real connection between his acts and the consequences thereof. Sometimes one must do anything they need to to survive or to manipulate the desired outcome. That is the way of the Lyons.
Erm, let’s not project our thoughts on the show to juicy Jussy’s deplorable actions.

Having never watched "Empire", I found it interesting to hear the insight from someone who is familiar with the dynamics of the show, and I appreciate her sharing that. I'm not sure why some people thought she was excusing his actions; I just saw it as a simple observation. Smollett wouldn't be the first actor to get a big head and lose sight of the line between himself and the character he plays.
I hope it stays front and center. Just to remind anyone else thinking of pulling this crap that it’s a foolish, idiotic and wontonly dreadful thing to do. No justification exists for it. And if you’re trying to prove a point, how about not behaving more poorly than those you’re trying to prove said point about.
What a friggin moron.
“Pulling a Jussie”, may become a new quote! His name will be in the history books but in a different way than he had imagined.
The parts of the ABC interview that I saw, showed me one of the worst acting I ever seen. A guy that tried to convince himself.
Sadly the real victims are “real victims” that now have become “victims “ again.
Does this idiot Smollett have any idea how much damage he has done to the cause he obviously cherishes so much?
I doubt he has a clue, he still refuses to admit wrongdoing. Narcissism and sociopathy 101. 1 man single handedly set back race, gay, hate crime victims, and political relations in this country.
Maybe he saw Kaepernick get paid and was hoping to cash in on victimhood, except Colin did it the legal route in the courts.
Well I'll admit, my first impression of this was wrong (i.e., I believed the story was most likely true though never outright committed to a strong opinion). This is a clear example of why we should wait to have all the facts before rushing to judgment, much like the Covington Catholic incident.
It is very easy to overestimate the People's prospects in an urban, state court jury trial. Federal trials have over a 90% conviction rate; state rates are lower. Even if things look bad for him now lots can go wrong in a jury trial, starting with, though not ending with, jury nullification. That is the desire of a jury to do extra-legal "justice."
Yes -- whether or not he is found guilty based on errors/technicalities remains to be seen but we all know -- come on -- that he has to be guilty.
