True. And little has changed in the intervening years from antebellum till now.
The Democrats founded the Ku Klux Klan, after being the South's principal slaveowners for a hundred years or more. Democrats still comprise the bulk of the Klan's membership (and leadership) today - a fact that has never changed. They work hard to conceal this fact.
And for decades (up to and including today) Democrats are the continual, chronic sponsors of legislation that promoted the idea that black people and other minorities, cannot make it without government help. But they promote no such programs for whites.
You're right: Today is far more important than the past. But the fact that the racism that permeates the Democrat party today, has remained unchanged for hundreds of years, counts too.
Being a minority does not exclude you from being a racist. They are the ones who have instituted anti-white racism with their affirmative action and double standards.
Now? Republicans in the lead but it can reverse again.
Before the 1970’s: Both with a heavy nod to Democrats, it’s a ugly history.
My dad always told me: you can’t catch a fish by sitting at home and complaining, you have to go fish. In 20 years in Florida i have never see a Republican candidate at any level even local, campaign in black communities. We had rye Republican convention in Tampa in 2012ish and not a single politician or candidate bothered to visit those communties, yet always complain they that group votes one way. You can’t say you want black people in the party and never talk to us. Sure you would hear a lot of complaints, and harsh criticism but you have to start somewhere, just can wish it so.
Black people have consertive fiscal leanings, and wary of goverment encroachment into private homes. But when you have members like Steve King and Roy Moore, it makes it impossible to vote for you. If Republicans cleaned up their crap and actually compaingn in black neborhoods, worked the ground then support would go up. There are mid west governors that have shown success doing this, it works but you have to want it.

A realignment of the political parties gradually occurred from about 1933 to 2000. In between those years, many southern states were represented by racist people who called themselves democrats. Some of them belonged to the Ku Klux Klan. Others voted against the civil rights legislation in the sixties. Its interesting that today the GOP has a virtual lock on the southern states. That tells you more about this shift than anything else.
Of course there was a shift from Democrat to Republican because the southern states moved away from the racism of the southern democratic party and their link to the KKK. Remember Robert Byrd was elected over and over in the US the congress and he was a grand Wizard of the KKK. Also remember it was a democratic southern supporter that shot Lincoln.
