It's sad that the guidelines would target 4 year olds like this.
Neither the school or church targeted the child, the parents are the ones who chose to put the child in a situation where their child could end up in religious crosshairs. The church has made no secret of their beliefs and interpretations of the Bible. This was a deliberate setup. Crappy, selfish parents willing to sacrifice their child in the name of a political agenda.

The discussion is nothing whether they can, it's whether they should.
Unlike the crappy, selfish parents, school did the right thing for the child given their beliefs. So, yes, they should have done it. They are under no obligation to change their beliefs. They did what they could to protect the child from being harmed. If you disagree with them then don’t go to their church or school. This can not be more simple, and we would not be having this discussion if her parents had put her wellbeing before their need to stick it to the church for not condoning their lifestyle.
This is not a discussion about whether or not the Catholic Church’s beliefs are right or wrong. That is immaterial to the discussion about whether or not they should have refused to enroll her.
