Never had a tutor in my entire life, not even my parents could help me... Never took a SAT prep course in my life either... education can help you to understand things to a small degree but do I think it could help in life? Not really, none of them would of taught me how to think... That's something you are just born with... Either you have it or you don't and no amount of education is going to change that, the only thing education does is that it makes you capable of not needing a babysitter...
It's possible that their experience at an SEC football program lead them to see much of the same cheating there that went on in the points you are referencing.
Having people take tests for you and fake classes etc. are not abnormal in bigtime college sports after all.
Funny part is that this little ring the FBI cracked is small potatoes compared to what goes on in just one of the power conferences let along across all of college football.
I read the article on USA Today and skimmed the indictment that was with the article. There were 40 people on this indictment. On one of Singer's e-mails to a current indictee, he mentions that he "helped" 96 students the previous year and about 700 the next. He ran this scheme from 2011 until last fall. I would be surprised that this is the end of the indictments.
Honestly not surprised. Rich white people paying to get their kids in prestigious colleges/universities has always been done and is not new. It is the reason why I roll my eyes about people complaining about affirmative action supposedly "helping" black people specifically. There have been generations of dumb a$$ rich white people getting into Harvard and Yale and other schools yet no one really pays attention to them because they are from rich, white families.
To think this is just "liberals" is also silly.
Didn't read this OP but read some other items about this and it was noted that some people also paid others to take test for them to get high scores. This was also very common until really the past 5 years which is why I also don't pay attention to people who try to get more invested in their racial prejudices based on SAT/ACT test scores in particular. Certain demographics are much more likely to cheat on standardized tests for college and they are the main reason why security is so tight today at testing centers to where they literally video you taking tests.
This goes back decades.... A lot of very well known people are going to be named. This was the rich and connected, buying their way in an unequal rigged scheme. Buying their kids way to being connected themselves.
I gotta tell ya. When friends of ours son..this boy, who is brilliant...had a meeting with a local Yale representative..the meeting took place at Starbucks..not near their home but in a posh locale of the City.
My first question was...why not meet at the school. School s for Seniors spend most of their senior year preparing for college lot s of on campus pull out and on campus weekend meetings and workshops for parents and students on how to get those best scholarships.
Second question was . did you guys ever hear back from this Rep?
And no they didnt. And..they said at the meeting he had nothing but a steno notebook with him and didnt write anything down.
Now I wonder if it was a set up part of this sting? Or actually someone involved to see if this family was willing to pay to play.
Its funny, but the intimidation and awe factor of actually coming close to getting into Yale..or so they believed..had them sugesting their son drive to the meeting in the parents Mercedes. Instead of the boys older toyota.

Dershowitz states that 60 years ago, even if Daddy bought son's way into Harvard or Yale, the student would flunk out if he was not capable. These days, students don't even get below a 'C' grade. Some schools have done away with required curriculums, grades, test scores for admissions, etc. These elite schools have merely become expensive branding machines that desperate people crave to brand their offspring with luxury logos--like Dior or Gucci, only with school brands like Stanford, Yale or Brown.
At Stanford University, a student can repeat a class as many times as she or he likes until they get the grade they want. As long as a family has enough money, their student can buy that diploma with high enough grades to get more doors opened. Actual intellectual talent doesn't factor in with these people.

You wonder why your kid who has 4.0 GPA, good SAT scores and blah, blah couldnt get into his college of choice because of the competition. Look at most of the top colleges the demographic is mostly foreign students and majority from Asia who's kids parents can pay cash for full tuition or even over pay just to get their child into their university of choice.

There is a LOT of "skill" that can be taught to kids that will improve their odds of doing well that an excellent student might not think of ahead of time.
This works for SAT or STAAR (Texas) testing:
1. In reading comprehension, read the questions carefully FIRST. There will be about 5 questions. Then read the passage. The answers to the questions will pop right out at you.
2. In the math portion, quickly go through and answer all the questions you can do easily. Then go back and do the harder ones, easiest first. Finally, what you may have left unanswered when the time runs out are the hardest questions, which it's likely you wouldn't have gotten right anyway.
3. In the last minute of the test, pick C on the ones you didn't answer yet.
