Why should it be different for McCain?
If Trump dropped dead tomorrow, would you speak no ill of him forever more?
If Trump dropped dead tomorrow I'd say "good riddance to bad rubbish". But I wouldn't obsess over him the way he's obsessed over John McCain. Clearly McCain is living rent free in Trump's head. Call it McCain's revenge.
*Trump puts us in a dilemma: on one hand, paying attention to his tweets can distract us from other matters. On the other hand, not taking him to task gives the impression that most of American society condones that behavior in a president. Even worse, to not challenge it is to normalize it, give it a false legitimacy, and thus coarsen our society's behavior in general - all the way down to the Smithville Rotary Club and high school teachers, even "ordinary fine parents".
