Think about it. New Jersey hasn't been a swing state since the 1990s presidentially. Tennessee hasn't been a swing state since 2000-when Al Gore failed to win his own home state.
If the EC is gone, the popular vote rules, but TN Democrats and NJ Republicans would actually go out and vote because their vote would be meaningful, won't it?
The popular vote would represent and acknowledge the individual of every state. Many don’t vote because they live in a solid red or blue state and feel their vote doesn’t really matter.

Won't the popular vote help Independents and third party candidates who are blocked from the Electoral College's 270 threshold?
States would have no reason to remain states either. Anyone wanting to live under "the rule of the majority" is an idiot.
The majority doesn't want to live under the rule of the minority either. IMO it's only a matter of time before the Electoral College is gone because rural areas are shrinking and urban areas are growing. The percentage differences will continue to increase until it will be clear that no way will the country stand for 25% of the voters controlling 75% of the population. And yes, the popular vote would mean voters in all states would have a reason to vote.
The electoral college is not going anywhere unless 38 states allow it's removal via constitutional convention. The supreme court will quickly put a stop to any attempt to eliminate it via some sort of short cut.
Anyone notice that the electoral college system worked fine for 228 years, up to the point in time that Hillary lost? And now it's a huge issue?
