If you have lived in a country that has a native language(s) that is not your own, it is vital you know at least a moderate or near moderate level of reading, speaking, and writing proficiency of 1 of those languages. I understand it takes time to learn a new language. However, if you have been in that country for years and you barely know any of 1 of those languages, your priorities are not in place. For the U.S., it helps to know American English because there are times where you will have to read, write, and speak it, especially at work.
Feel free to use your native language like 90%-95% of the time but that remaining 5%-10% of the time is important when the situation calls for it. Likewise, I should have taken more Mexican Spanish courses in high school and college.
14%...a lot
20%...some
25%...not much
41%....not at all
..the majority is not bothered by it much at all....66%....and a additional 20% is only some
No, you need to put your glasses on.
The OP excerpt explicitly said:

According to Pew Research Center, 47 percent of such Republicans say it would bother them “some” or “a lot” to “hear people speak a language other than English in a public place.” Eighteen percent of white Democrats said they would be similarly bothered.
And as I demonstrated by investigating WaldoKitty's link to the actual survey, that is exactly what the survey tells us. The chart with the results is at the bottom of the survey.

This doesn't come as much of a surprise but it's troubling nonetheless. But time moves forward and whether everyone likes it or not, we will be living in an increasingly diverse society, regardless of whether or not everyone is comfortable with that.
I'm fascinated when I hear people speaking other languages. I move closer and see if I can understand any of it. Sometimes I can, as I've studied several other languages and often communicate with them online.
One of my grandfathers was a sea captain in the days of sailing ships and could converse in numerous languages he'd picked up in ports and from his crew.
