Our goal in this experiment was to tease out prejudice among those who didn't understand the question. Most people don't know the origins of our numerical system and yet picked a tribal answer anyway. You can argue that one is worse than the other but both prove a similar point.
Do you really think people who want to see Arabic numerals banned are liberals?
uhm.. I am a little older...
I was taught that the Hindu-Arabic number system is what we call the numbers we use
apparently in todays school system, this is not taught... otherwise you would not have 56% saying we should not teach Arabic (as opposed to Roman) numerals

I was going to say that I don't understand the point of the poll to begin with, because the confusion with what Arabic numerals are would make the resulting data pretty useless. The only reason you would conduct this poll is if you WANTED to do what they have now admitted to.
I would say 90-95% of Americans do not know that the numbers we used are called Arabic Numerals. In the poll mentioned, I'd be willing to bet the vast majority of the 44% who said they should be taught also do not know that our numerals are Arabic Numerals, but believe that a new set of numerals should be taught because it will add to diversity.
well that's the liberal school system for you.....
This was a fake answer to compensate for the reality that most of the people saying we shouldn't teach Arabic numerals in schools were probably conservatives. Something workingclasshero would be loathe to admit.
