The whole country was a lot more to the right than we are now. By the standards of the time, he was on the left, while by today’s standards, he very well could be a republican. But, there is no real telling what he would be today, because it is highly likely he would have changed with the times. The same could be said of a lot of democratic politicians. Look at Bill Clinton, Diane Feinstein, Joe Biden. Their former selves would have a hard time surviving in today’s Democratic Party.

Nixon would be considered the most honest, honorable and accomplished POTUS ever by the Right....that is, except for Trump. Trump would get the nod due to bigly words. Nixon didn't have those words.

JFK thought government should be active in improving people’s lives. He would be called a socialist by republicans if he was alive today.

Many of JFK's policies were passed into law by LBJ (mostly, although some were already in force).

They included....just for starters....

1. Clean Air Laws - 1963
2. Peace Corps
3. Man on the Moon Program
4. Transportation Segregation outlawed (SCOTUS)
5. Nuke test-ban treaty
6. War on Poverty
7. Civil Rights
8. Voting Rights
9. Medicare

I could go on, but it's complete Fake News and Worldview to suggest the Right would approve of most of those programs today. In fact, right here on CD we have many on the Right speaking out against them to this Day.

Out of all of those, perhaps just the Man on the Moon would have been today bi-partisan to a degree. The rest are Progressive Policies.

Sorry, but the thread title does not compute.

Of course, if one comes from a middle class white family some of these laws were troubling, especially in the South. They already had most of these rights so they saw them as dangerous...that others would have them also.

But even just Medicare alone.....and SOME Clean Air. C'mon, these helps us all.

This is almost as laughable as claiming MLK Jr. would be a republican today.

To a very limited extent, by today’s standards. While he was for equal opportunity, he firmly opposed racial quotas. He also said that cutting taxes was the best way to grow the economy. He was a war hero. He believed a strong military was the best guarantor of peace. He was anti abortion. He was also very anti communist, and was the President who placed the original trade embargo on Cuba.

"Our tax system still siphons out of the private economy too large a share of personal and business purchasing power and reduces the incentive for risk, investment and effort--thereby aborting our recoveries and stifling our national growth rate."

JFK

None of the things you mentioned seem unreasonable to me for that time period. We had different problems than we do now. But the quote above? Give me a democrat that believes that today, and that is a democrat that I would consider voting for.

Hey look at that.

When you believe "alternate facts" historical figures can just be whatever you want them to be to support your desired narrative.

And all you have to do is stop placing any value on the truth and just lie all the time. Small price to pay, amirite?

Thats not true at all. The policies he advocated for would be labeled socialism today. Labor unions were much stronger and wouldnt tolerate the right wing agenda we see today with Wall Street running roughshod over the typical worker.

Do you know what the top marginal tax rate was when he said that?

91%.

What is it today?

37%.

Which democrat advocates for a 91% top marginal tax rate today? Bernie Sanders advocates for a 52% top marginal rate on incomes over $10m. Still a far cry from JFK.
