Let's see. If a young, married Donald Trump had left a party drunk in the company of a girl, driven drunk off a bridge, swum away from the sinking car as the girl drowned inside, and waited half a day to tell anyone what had happened and where she was....

....The press would have sympathized with him, lionized him, speculated on the effect of his lawbreaking and manslaughter on his possible Presidential prospects, and even announced that the girl's horrific death was "worth it".

Correct?

50 Years of Shame: How Journalists Protected Ted Kennedy After Chappaquiddick

By Scott Whitlock | July 16, 2019 7:00 AM EDT

Thursday marks 50 years since Ted Kennedy, the liberal Democrat from Massachusetts, drove off a bridge on Chappaquiddick Island and left Mary Jo Kopechne to drown in the back seat. For decades, journalists and the TV networks downplayed the incident and portrayed the senator as the victim.

Despite the circumstances, New York Times correspondent James Reston’s initial coverage in 1969 framed the story as a "Kennedy family" tragedy, rather than as a tragedy for the Kopechne family.

The champeen of Chappaquiddick is all, anybody talked about for months. No news I saw ignored, downplayed or tried to make him a victim.

IIRC, there was more talk about him than her.

Considering the fact that many never forgave his behavior, his public redemption was not predicated on her sacrifice. Who knows about his private agony. I never saw my siblings assassinated on tv. Maybe some of us understood that would have an affect on a person.

His relationship with Orin Hatch had a lot to do with his success in the senate.

IMO, his running against Carter's re election caused me to never forgive him.

Good point.

Kennedy never stopped haranguing, smearing, raging, and also telling the truth about Carter, right up to the final vote in the Dem Convention to nominate Carter, long after it was clear Carter would get the nomination. His behavior presaged the future almost-identical behavior of our present Democrat fanatics who can do nothing but rage, twist, lie, and destroy.

Kennedy was single-handedly the most influential man in the country, possibly excepting Carter himself, in Carter's eventual loss.

But at least that cloud had a silver lining in Kennedy's case. His scorched-earth tactics caused a sitting President to lose an election, and turned the Presidency over to the most successful Pres in modern times, Ronald Reagan.

For that, we owe him cordial thanks.

Too bad those thanks are so badly dimmed by Kenndy's philandering, drunk driving, and homicidal negligence leading to manslaughter.

For all of the critics of Trump and the right wing bias of Fox news, I wonder how many of these critics would be willing to call out the darlings of the liberal media and the legacy of one of their political idols for the horrible crime that was perpetuated and covered up!
That article was the perception of people who probably were not around at the time. It is also BS.

Read and watch the media treatment when it happened.

Protected him from what? Any thinking journalist could piece enough of that story together to figure out that the whole story was a ruse by Ted Kennedy to attempt to cover up the fact that he and Kopechne were having an affair. Kennedy was not in the car when it went off the bridge. If he was, he would’ve died too.

She didn’t where she was going and drove off the bridge. Kennedy knew the island too well to have done that. Once everyone realized that Kopechne left all of her personal items, including her hotel room keys back at the cottage, it was totally clear what she and Kennedy drove off to go do.

This is the reason why her family never talked publicly about what happened.

50 Years of Shame: How Journalists Protected Ted Kennedy After Chappaquiddick

Thursday marks 50 years since Ted Kennedy, the liberal Democrat from Massachusetts, drove off a bridge on Chappaquiddick Island and left Mary Jo Kopechne to drown in the back seat. For decades, journalists and the TV networks downplayed the incident and portrayed the senator as the victim.

Despite the circumstances, New York Times correspondent James Reston’s initial coverage in 1969 framed the story as a "Kennedy family" tragedy, rather than as a tragedy for the Kopechne family.
(snip)
One of the most galling examples of media revisionism came from journalist Charles Pierce in the January 5, 2003 Boston Globe magazine profile of Kennedy. Though he warned that Kennedy lost his “moral credibility” to be president, the mostly sympathetic profile cheered the Democrat’s work to vastly expand the welfare state. Pierce infamously wrote: "If she had lived, Mary Jo Kopechne would be 62 years old. Through his tireless work as a legislator, Edward Kennedy would have brought comfort to her in her old age."
(snip)
How far did liberal journalists go in order to explain away Chappaquiddick? In this shocking quote (selected by the Media Research Center as the worst quote of 2009), Discover magazine's Melissa Lafsky wrote a piece for the Huffington Post suggesting that Kopechne might see her death as a necessary sacrifice:

"Mary Jo wasn’t a right-wing talking point or a negative campaign slogan....We don’t know how much Kennedy was affected by her death, or what she’d have thought about arguably being a catalyst for the most successful Senate career in history....[One wonders what] Mary Jo Kopechne would have had to say about Ted’s death, and what she’d have thought of the life and career that are being (rightfully) heralded. Who knows — maybe she’d feel it was worth it. "
"After Chappaquiddick" after during and even today!

They were obviously compensated by the Kennedy family preemptively...that goes without saying. That’s what The Kennedys have always done.

That aside, they wanted to protect the reputation of their daughter, and they didn’t want her to be known as the girl who died after carrying on a salacious affair with Ted Kennedy.

Yet he kept his Senate seat, was not prosecuted, and held onto power until he died. My My. Yeah, equal treatment my ***. Nobody criticized him for being Obese, like the don't criticize Hillary. Why?
