Believe it or not, our history is important. Things like "identifying language" and "de facto language" have no vale and don't mean a thing. As previously mentioned, The Constitution was printed and distributed in multiple languages.
Learning and education (language history, etc. is never a waste of time, but perhaps this thought process is reflected in your views. Lack of respect for knowledge leads to ignorance.
Fortunately, this view does not dominate and the US has no standard language. Love it or leave it.
Where did I say that history isn't important but the fact remains that English is our identifying, defacto language. How in the world can you deny that????
Who's lacking respect for knowledge? There is knowledge involved in everything you learn but time only allows one to pick the most useful ones that enhances our lifestyles and careers. I'm a native English speaker and I love our country so WTH do you mean love it or leave it?

That's more targeted towards those who want to change this nation into something it is not. This is a great country largely due to not having an overreaching government defining things like an official language. Love it or leave it.
From a practical or de facto standpoint, American English is already our national language. What difference would it really make if it was legally-declared as such?
Authoritarians want everything as law so there are penalties.
Just leave it to states. I would bet at least some of the people who are realllllyy pushing for it to be official would try to use that to further harass poor strangers speaking a foreign language in public, so no thanks.

I don't see how declaring English as our official languages is overreaching. It's a cost saving measure for one thing. At least half of our states have made English their official language and it should be on the federal level also. It has nothing to do with love it or leave it. Perhaps those that don't want our national language made "official" should leave it.
