In real life Carrol O'Connor who played Archie was a very liberal, progressive Democrat. His job on the show was to show how close minded, and bigoted a right wing person could be as the Producer, Norman Lear was also a Far Left Progressive. O'Connor was such a good actor that he did his job very well as the "lovable" bigot. It was a landmark show.
Rob Reiner's role and that of his wife Gloria were to be the heroic "liberals" speaking sense to Archie's bigotry, and prejudice. The show was an early advertisement and promotion of liberal, progressive dogma, and the demonizing of all that thought otherwise. It worked, and many shows followed suit to the point where much of today's entertainment is thinly veiled, Left Wing Propaganda.
I will give Norman Lear credit for showing that Blacks, like George Jefferson could also be prejudiced against Whites and bigots. On a few occasions, Archie and George agreed with their own forms of bigotry, and saw eye to eye in their mutual prejudice.
Yep. It was quite odd to see racism being displayed by a black person being shown on tv back then.
I never did understand why conservatives liked the Archie Bunker show when it was clear that the character of AB was promoting a false narrative of conservative people. He was mocking them, exaggerating the behaviors they were promoting as prejudices.
I don't believe ALL Trump supports are racist. Just a strong majority of them.

Oh come on, why play coy now?
Just yesterday it was “tens of millions” of your fellow American that are racist.
At any rate, Trump routinely insults an even higher number with his racist comments every week.
How did calling Trump voters a bunch of racists and deplorables work out for you in 2016?
You might want to give that some thought as we head into 2020.

You think Trump's comment are racist due solely to YOUR racism. He's never said anything racist, and you know it. You are PROJECTING like most progressives.

Agreed. There were also many "liberals" back then that HATED the show because they saw it promoting prejudice and bigotry while the show actually mocked it. I was a kid, and understood that. The show's entire purpose was to make Archie look like an ass, and it did.
O'Connor was so good, however, that he was able to obtain some kind of a "pass" due to his personality. If you think about it, that was a heck of a piece of acting on his part. Someone you want to hate, but just can't for some reason. He did have an occasional good side.
