I unironically embrace the bashing of rural Americans. they, as a group, are bad people who have made bad life decisions. Some, I assume, are good people. But this nostalgia for some imagined pastoral way of life is stupid and we should shame people who aren't pro-city.
Look closely at most so-called "country people" and you will find they are anything but....they rely 100% on the same stuff we all do.
It is somewhat true that, in our modern society, those who decide not to pursue a specialized education (in trades and/or in other knowledge based industries) will largely be left behind. I think the Opiate Crisis and the amazing reliance of places like WV on the Federal Dole prove this out.
They aren't bad people. They - or their parent and then they - made decisions which are not, in the modern society and world, allowing their families to be fruitful.
No amount of excuses will do....isn't it the Right that tells us "you have free will"? Do these people have to live in trailers and dole out massive amounts of pills to their families each morning?
This sounds like pull up the bootstraps argument that a lot of conservatives make. As a liberal I think it is important that they have access to job opportunities and training in the new economy. They also should have access to affordable subsidized health care, however, a conservative would argue that they need to pull their own weight and shouldn’t rely on subsidies. With mechanized farming and automated manufacturing these traditional job opportunities just aren’t there. Natural gas and horizontal hydraulic fracturing of shale is what killed coal. That and most coal mining is mechanized strip mining that is less labor intensive.
Meh, A large portion of my family lives in Boone County WV, they've been coal miners for generations and still are. They're getting along just fine, they like their way of life and where they have chosen to live. It's not up to anyone else to decide how other people should live their lives, if you don't like living in the country and coal mining then you shouldn't do it but don't try to shame and judge others who do.

They are control freaks and want to tell you and FORCE you how to live your lives. It is the basis all liberal/progressive (Democrat) thought.
