Obama his first election. It didn’t take long for me to regret voting for him, let alone contributing time and money to his campaign.
I too was so excited about Obama too, so excited that I drove from San Antonio to Sta Fe, New Mexico to knock on doors for him. The doors that I knocked on were surprisingly excited about Obama, quite a few first time voters. Obamacare is what turned me off, so I voted 3rd party in 2012. Overall, he’s many times better than what we have now.
Truman, I wasn't old enough to vote but he was a 'get it done' President, hasn't been another one until Trump. The rest of those in between were nothing but 'I promise you' political hacks. And the new gang of democrats are the same. " I'll give you everything, just vote for me" and as usual nothing will be true or accomplished. Get your head out of the sand voters!!
I always looked forward to a new president whether I voted for them or not. Obama showed promise in 2008 but by 2012 I wanted to see him go although Mittens was not much of an option.
I voted for Trump more because I didn't like Hilda one single bit. I never cared for Trump's NYC personality but he's turned out to be better than I expected, at least as far as policies go, and I can't argue about the results. I think that not being a politician has caused some of his problems because he has a different way of doing things that rub the DC swamp rats the wrong way. I do think that he's been treated unfairly and singled out for things that wouldn't even be mentioned if it was any other president.
I was born in 1953, and there have only been three candidates that I was actually excited about -- Bobby Kennedy, George McGovern, and Bill Clinton. However, I was actually even more excited about NOT having Nixon win and then be re-elected, and ditto for Bush II.
What about you?
This was a very interesting post, partly because it shows a nice perspective of time, partly because it's free from the common tendency of bragging about picking a winner.
I think it's worth noting how many people in this thread mentioned Trump, and ONLY Trump. That, to me, indicates people who are very young or very disengaged/unsophisticated about politics.
I was excited about Bill Clinton and also about Obama. Maybe because they seemed energetic (compared to Bush I) and smart (compared to Bush II). And both great speakers. In part, I was proud of America for having a black president, and was proud that Hillary got as far as she did (in fact, winning the popular vote). Of course, technically we lag behind, as other countries have long had women as heads of state, but, still, it was a good step.
