Yes, ethnically, she's probably a much better fit to the role than many of Hollywood's casting decisions. Somebody didn't do their homework, and they should retract their criticism.
Sadly, there have been a large number of incidents where the offended resort to how it made them "feel" to wave away any complaints after it was shown that they misunderstood or mistakenly thought something was bad.
Facts be darned, it made me feel bad res ipso factor the thing was wrong even if it's my own lack of knowledge at fault.
P.S. Also just blustering through the mistake while claiming it was correct despite all factual evidence is in vouge as well.
Who says the left and right don't have things in common?
That much is quite clear. The Greek Ptolomies also tended to see their Greekness as a mark of superiority, though over the centuries the rich and deep culture of Ancient Egypt certainly fused with their own Greek culture.

The Egyptians held all their neighbors in low esteem, you made up the part about the Nubians being looked down upon for being black.
Prior to building the Aswan High Dam, a large mural that depicted black Nubians being enslaved by lighter skinned Egyptians that is now under water. The intent was clear enough. Nubia was a threat, so this was a warming that if they attacked Egypt, they would lose and become slaves of the Egyptians. That's the most significant case that comes to mind. Just looking over the hieroglyphics and art, it's clear enough that there were a good majority of Egyptians that were not particularly black. Not as white as an Englishman either, that's fair. But not Sub-Saharan black. It's also pretty clear that some very black skinned Egyptians were also around.

In 1974, the UNESCO held an Egyptology conference where at the end, the prevalent opinion was that ancient Egypt belonged to the subsaharan African cultural sphere in all aspects such as religion, language, furniture, and so on. The details can be found here on unesco.org.
Even nowadays, 3000 years later after Greek, Roman and Arab invasions, the people who live in the parts that were the main centers of ancient Egypt, the people there are black. Northern Egypt was called lower Egypt. Upper Egypt, the center of their civilisation, was in the south, close to the Nubian border.
It's a controversial opinion at best and it has hardly been proven. You could probably say that Egypt may have looked a bit like the cast of the live action Beauty of the Beast. Probably less than half black, but Egypt is one of those few points along the Sahara where the Sahara isn't much of a barrier to migration. The rest of Northern Africa was pretty Mediterranean olive complected for sure. That too has changed over time.
The Nubians and Egyptians definitely seem to have interacted a great deal. Going much farther south, not so much. There was a lot more interaction between Ancient Egypt and the Hittites, Akkadians, Sumerians and Greeks.
I think the best conclusion is that we simply don't know what the majority of ancient Egyptians looked like, but there is more strength backing the claim that they were lighter skinned like we see in Egypt today. Egypt always had a massive population in the ancient world, and presuming that it was almost completely replaced is silly. Too many Egyptians to make that happen. Still, if somebody does a movie about Ramses II, whether they cast a black guy or a olive complected white guy, nobody is definitely wrong.
The fact that Hollyweird is routinely casting black people in historical roles where no black people were around -- that should make it open season in both directions. If David Gyasi can be Achilles, then Chris Hemsworth can play Shaka Zulu, and everyone can just shut the hell up about it. If blackwashing is okay, so is whitewashing. If we want to be historically accurate about skin color, then we should just all agree that blackwashing and whitewashing are both verboten.
Can someone- anyone- please explain to me this African-American obsession with Cleopatra?...............
Ignorance, masked as intellectual accuracy. People think they are informed and want to put this assumed intellectual superiority on display. So they demand this or that and think they are demanding honesty.
Another good example is the African-America habit of calling each other "Uncle Tom" when they feel betrayed. If they had actually read Uncle Toms Cabin they would know that Uncle Tom was a hero who died rather than betray his fellow slaves.
As for Alexander the great? The left should embrace him. Why? He was bisexual. And he believed in the people he conquered to be equals just as the Greeks and other European peoples. Alexander the great is not a white supremacist. Sadly his generals believed in the opposite.
True, but Alexander the Great was from an entirely different epoch -- 300 years, give or take, before Anthony and Cleopatra.

I think it was because Uncle Tom was seemingly happy and complacent as a slave, even before he was shipped off and ended up with Simon Legree. Lots of singing added to the image.
Back to Cleopatra, I have been hearing this stuff all my life. What we be so boast worthy about Cleopatra having been Black?
Would the typical Leftist know a Seleucid dynasty from an Alexandrian General from a Parthian dynasty drawn from the ethnic Parni? No they wouldn't because they relentlessly demonstrate they are idiots.
Her father was a macedonian greek... The idiot left don't realize that Cleopatra is more than likely white... these liberals look at the African continent and think everyone there is black...
Because Leftists are Racist and love stereotypes. Everything is about race, gender, sexual orientation, etc.
