If we came to a war, the US and other countries could just forcefully claim those assets back, like China has done in the past. Oops, thanks for running our meat plant, we want it back now. Without full scale invasion, there is nothing they could do to stop it. The challenge is this applies to American (and other countries) who have operations in China. China could walk in and take control and these companies with big stock prices would not be work the paper their stock is printed on.
So overall, the wealthy elites have gotten rich and continue to do so on the backs of Americans and poor Chinese, but if push came to shove, we could just take the assets back by force.
