John Hinckley, who wounded then U.S. President Ronald Reagan and three others in a 1981 assassination attempt, was released without conditions on Wednesday in compliance with a federal judge's order.
He had received full-time conditional release in 2016 after 30 years in a psychiatric hospital in Washington and had lived with his mother in Virginia until her death last year.
A jury had found him not guilty by reason of insanity in his 1982 trial, prompting Congress and some states to pass laws restricting the use of insanity as a defense.
...
Last September, U.S. District Judge Paul Friedman ruled that Hinckley was "mentally stable," had complied with the terms of his conditional release, which had limited his travel and internet use, and that he should be granted unconditional release.
Doctors who examined Hinckley told the court the risk of him committing violence were remote, and federal prosecutors agreed. Reagan's daughter Patti Davis opposed Hinckley's release, saying Hinckley was a narcissist who she did not believe felt remorse.
Since we are letting many of the other criminals loose, why not this one as well - especially since his crime was against the political opposition?
Hinkley has not been a threat for some time and has been outside St Elizabeths for several years. He inflicted far more damage on Brady than Reagan.
He has been allowed to visit with his parents unsupervised since 2005.

And when Brady died his death was ruled a homicide by the Medical Examiner because of the injuries sustained in the assassination attempt.
Doesn't seem like someone who should qualify for any sort of release, let alone unconditional release where he is no longer going to be monitored. Say what you want, but even though he was allowed visits as far back as 2005 he was still being monitored by the Government. I wouldn't be too worried about what he would do when he is being watched, I would be more concerned about what he would do when he is no longer being watched.
I just hope he doesn't have a "relapse" and end up with a group of people saying "Gee...We never saw this coming"
It's important to understand the deep heart felt hatred and resentment against Biden is so intense on here that some people can't stay on topic. So, the topic is about Hinkley being released, not about Biden.
If someone who attempted to assassinate a president was let free, and I was president, I think I would be doubling down on security, at the very least. He belongs in a psych ward, both of them actually, forever, throw away the key.
