“Theft is an issue. It’s higher than what it has historically been,” he told CNBC’s Squawk Box. “If that’s not corrected over time, prices will be higher, and/or stores will close,” McMillon said.

Last month, Target Chief Financial Officer Michael Fiddelke said shoplifting has jumped about 50% year over and year, leading to more than $400 million in losses.

Maybe they should think about putting more staff back in the stores and eliminate the self checkouts. Shop lifting is certainly more likely to occur when nobody is watching.

The local newspaper posts security video pictures of people pushing shopping carts of stolen merchandise out the door at Walmart. They know the merchandise is stolen, they know the value of the items to the exact penny, and they have video, including parking lot video showing the vehicle the culprit is driving. It seems like Walmart would have a solution by now. I'll bet this is the majority of thefts at Walmart as opposed to people sticking an item in their pocket, purse, etc. or not scanning an item in the self-checkout.

Lol. Self checkout is nothing new. The numbers are over a years time, and historically high. It comes as no surprise as loser criminals have run rampant.

I think when we get this next severe (and permanent) economic downturn, many stores and business will simply shut down due to widespread theft. What's the point of operating a business if you're just going to get picked clean by thieves and robbers? The only place to purchase goods will be the black or underground market.

Someone is always watching at Walmart. The scanning machine records your every move.

Exactly. And when their stores turn into a mess because they don't have enough to keep it clean or neat let alone restock the criminals will think nobody cares.

And Walmart isn't always the cheapest. My last trip there for some grocery items might be my last for a while. They were higher than at least 2 near by supermarkets on geners/their house brand.

Bingo…and it stops scanning when an item is put in the bagging area that hasn’t been scanned.

The criminals don’t care if it’s clean or not. They’re entitled losers that are going to steal as much as they can.

So? If nobody is watching what the scanner records, how would Walmart find the shoplifter?
