I think when we get this next severe (and permanent) economic downturn, many stores and business will simply shut down due to widespread theft. What's the point of operating a business if you're just going to get picked clean by thieves and robbers? The only place to purchase goods will be the black or underground market.
The store won't be open to everybody. Membership gets you a pass for the lock on your phone. If they catch you stealing it is revoked and you lose access. For crackheads and losers there can be a window you orde4 through. It puts the money in the window if it wants its beer.
You could possibly see a sally port type door to exit. One door opens, you go in, the scan comes up green nothing stolen you go out the next one.
Just shutdown Walmarts in blue towns and cities. Problem solved.
Not going to work. I've seen more Wal-Marts in small towns and red areas than in "blue cities". I live in a Republican-ran city and Wal-Marts are the top places dealing with theft, along with dollar stores.
Stores with a membership basis and tight admission will be more popular if the state and local prosecutors won't do their jobs.
There would probably be lawsuits. So my idea that I just posted might work. Member level access prices and a window you can order through if you don't have enough social standing to not steal and loot.

I like the idea of banning convicted shoplifters from in-person shopping.

Stores already ban people in my area. The problem is that person needs to be arrested. Once they are arrested the store tells the police any attempt to enter the store is now subject to criminal trespass. Because they don't do this a system of controlled entry would have to be the way to do it.
Walmart goes after the staff and vendors thinking they were the cause of shrink.
The reality is that merchandise walked out the front door.
I see the end of 24-hour shopping in Walmart before long.
The Walmarts in my area (Metro Denver, Colorado) haven’t been 24 hours for awhile. The 24-hour King Soopers (Kroger) are gone as well; they mostly close at midnight now.
While my area has experienced an increase in crime due to Democrat “soft on crime” policies, I don’t think the reduction in hours had to do with that. I think it’s due to staffing/not being able to find enough workers.

Well, there are cases where people get banned from stores as well as get imprisoned. The thief might get banned from THAT store, but they'll go on to steal from other stores, or from people in the streets. Many thieves understand nothing but violence.
