A state judge ruled late Wednesday that Illinois’ SAFE-T act was unconstitutional, handing prosecutors a major win just days before the cashless bail law was set to take effect.

Kankakee County Circuit Court Judge Thomas W. Cunnington concluded the state legislature "improperly attempted to amend the [Illinois] Constitution" by ending cash bail with the Safety, Accountability, Fairness and Equity-Today Act.

The SAFE-T Act, a sweeping law addressing police regulations, criminal justice issues and how courts handle criminal defendants originally passed in January 2021.

Gov. J.B. Pritzker signed the measure last year. While some measures of the SAFE-T Act impacting police have already gone into effect, others like the end of cash bail in Illinois are set to go into effect Jan. 1.

Wow! I'm impressed that Illinois has a sane judge. The Democrats and Pritzer surely are NOT sane, as proven by the fact that they passed this extreme anti-cop measure.

Glad to hear that someone in Illinois is rejecting the far-left, pro-criminal, radical extremism, being pushed by the far-left, radical Democrats, who control Illinois' State Government!

Mixed feelings; part of me wanted to see Illinois continue to go down the crapper, courtesy of Democrats.

Well, you may get your wish in the end. I'm pretty sure the Illinois Supreme Court is made up of left wing lunatics of the same type as Pritzker and the Democrats who passed the bill to begin with.

This is great news even if only temporary! Just hoping it holds up though.

What is the main reason they want cashless bail? Is it because they use the tactic that minorities can get stuck in jail for weeks/months because they can't afford bail and some of the crimes are petty? I.e. possession of drugs etc??

CHICAGO — A woman accused of pepper-spraying four Chicago cops during Mexican Independence Day festivities in the Loop became the first person in the city to have a new felony criminal case handled under the state’s new no-cash-bail law.
Esmeralda Aguilar, 24, of Cicero, was released from custody after appearing before Judge Mary Marubio at the Leighton Criminal Courthouse on Monday afternoon. Prosecutors did not ask Marubio to hold Aguilar in the county jail.

The days of me caring what happens in Illinois are long over. They can blast each other in the streets, and then get released a couple hours later, and then start shooting up the streets again for all I care.

I don’t live there, so it’s not for me to dictate how they live.

I'll never understand how having access to some money, and nothing else, makes a person worthy of release.

Cashless bail, intended to help minorities.....and it will greatly increase crime against minorities.

All of the soft on crime reforms have hurt the poorer and browner folks in Chicago the worst. THey can't afford to replace a stolen car, 95% of the gun deaths are minorities so an extra 200+ gun deaths are not *progress*.

Hey, I can understand SOME cases for no bail, we don't want to ruin someone over a first or second offense. But to let people just revolving door out for dozens of crimes up to and including felonies is insane.
