A Special Master will proceed with the new Congressional Districts drawn in Alabama. In June, the previous Congressional Districts were thrown out by the Supreme Court. The Alabama Legislature drew a 2nd set of districts in July which was also thrown out by a lower court, which opened the door for a Special Master to draw the districts. Officials in Alabama appealed the lower court's ruling to the Supreme Court in order to use the districts drawn by the Legislature back in July and the appeal was just rejected by the Supreme Court

[WASHINGTON -- The Supreme Court on Tuesday allowed the drawing of a new Alabama congressional map with greater representation for Black voters to proceed. The new districts also could help Democrats trying to flip control of the House of Representatives.

The justices, without any noted dissent, rejected the state's plea to retain Republican-drawn lines that were turned down by a lower court.

In refusing to intervene, the high court allowed a court-appointed special master's work to continue. On Monday, he submitted three proposals that would create a second congressional district where Black voters comprise a majority of the voting age population or close to it.

Good.

And somehow a few years ago, the SC thought gutting the voting rights act was a good idea, that the preclearance wasn’t needed anymore.

As a side note, I'll put this out there. This is a part of why 90% of the Black population votes Democrat. The fear that top to bottom Republican governance would mean the Voting Rights Act would get gutted.

The majority of Black Americans live in the South. And there is a sense that the southern states will always need pre-clearance, thanks to the history of overt violations of voting rights, often to keep Blacks from voting. Jim Crow is over, but the distrust still lingers.

Good question. If Alabama's GOP was confident they could get Black votes in large numbers, they wouldn't need to do this gerrymandering.

It's the Republicans who are trying desperately to disenfranchise blacks. Your attempt to try and turn this around and pin it on Democrats is pathetic. But I expect nothing less from modern conservatives.
