Karachi, Pakistan
CNN

More than 300 Pakistani nationals have been killed in the sinking of a overcrowded fishing trawler off the coast of Greece, the latest tragedy to expose the refugee crisis confronting the European Union as tens of thousands seek sanctuary from war, persecution and poverty.

The chairman of of Pakistan’s Senate, Muhammad Sadiq Sanjrani, disclosed the numbers in a statement Sunday, sending condolences to grieving families of the dead.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with you, and we pray that the departed souls find eternal peace,” Sanjrani said. “This devastating incident underscores the urgent need to address and condemn the abhorrent act of illegal human trafficking.”

Greek authorities have yet to confirm Pakistan’s death toll.

Figured this needed its own thread since everyone's talking about it in the Titanic submersible thread.

A bunch of could've or should'ves but in the end it's still a tragedy. Shows the desperation and/or they put their life savings into this one chance to escape.

I hate to say but the pictures kind of make it look like a party boat. It says it was coming from Libya. Why are Pakistan refugees traveling to Greece via Libya?

There is a lot of irony here. We went to the Pakistanis before Afghanistan fell to the Taliban to ask about opening an “over the horizon” air base in Pakistan where we could recover and regenerate aircraft and drones and take the fight to the Taliban. This base likely would’ve made a difference and stopped the Taliban from taking Afghanistan.

Now, the Pakistani Taliban, emboldened and being supported by the Afghan Taliban, have launched attacks throughout Pakistan.

Sometimes it’s best to actually listen to the US.

Sanjrani's quote rings a little disingenuous. These aren't people escaping Pakistan against their will - they're desperate to leave a government he's part of, and willing to literally risk their lives to flee.

And their only option, to flee his government, is using smugglers.

NO SYMPATHY from me. They made their own choices.

But this has been going one for a long time. I am mostly worried about all the pollution from human corpses damage the seafood.

Unbelievably callous. Wonder what's made you this way. Probably whatever it is, you deserve empathy.

Or they can try to change their govt instead of making themselves someone else's problem.

These people are nothing but cowards, and lazy. NO SYMPATHY what so ever.

Are you saying that this is more blood on Biden's hands due to the stupid and embarrassing retreat out of Afghanistan that left Billions in military equipment for the Taliban to use?

It sure sounds like it.

I do have sympathy for these poor people that are trying to escape. They are true refugees unlike the sort that is coming through our Southern Border with their bogus asylum claims.

For those that have zero sympathy and are calling them cowards put yourself in their position for a second. How can they fight back against the Taliban that has US weapons of war?

We had what the Dems called an Insurrection on Jan6th and those that dared to Trespass through the halls of the Capitol have had their lives turned upside down and some are still in prison. If the Pakistani people tried to fight for some independence and what is right and failed they would be executed. They do not fool around in the Middle East.

Escaping on a boat might be their only chance.
