But it could delay the start of the trial until after the election.
Could. But not likely. That's a very long time from now. The DC court knows what he is up to. The argument that he is immune is utter nonsense. Everyone is thinking weeks of deliberation. The DC court is expediting this. They could rule in days. SCOTUS could simply not hear it. Too many ifs and unknowns right now.

It will be funny seeing all these politically based prosecutions of Trump while he is President. Most probably they will be delayed again until after Trump is President, in which case, there will be no need for all of these politically based indictments.

You pegged it. I just got through posting the same thing before I saw yours.
Either that, or they just don't see any reason why the normal appeals process shouldn't play out and why they should do the prosecution any special favors.

Good guess. After reading a bit more, SCOTUS is not jumping the gun. They will wait for the Appeals Court to rule against Trump, Trump will appeal to SCOTUS, within two weeks they decline to hear the appeal, and the trial begins March 4 as planned.
The other three criminal trials are still on schedule as well.

That was likely the deciding factor. Smith hedged his bets by getting an expedited review by the DC court. TV anchors are having cats right now, but at the end of the day, it might make very little real difference in the timetable.
Clarence Thomas and Alito didn’t want to take the case because it would interrupt their billionaire sponsored all expenses paid luxury Christmas vacations. Oh but don’t worry - it’s all in the up and up. The billionaires are just really good friends.
