Do you know anything about the cat and mouse games played by both sides? Spies are caught regularly, and many of them are under cover as “journalists”, “embassy attaches”, or “military officers”. They willingly signed up for the risk and sometimes they are held for trades and sometimes it doesn’t go that well for them. There is a wall at the CIA HQ in Langley, VA with hundreds of names inscribed for the men and women whose luck ran out.

I agree with you here. It's ridiculous ( to say the least) to vilify one dictatorial government, while praising the other dictatorial government at the same time.
