It isn't 'that simple'. Russia has a similar capacity to essentially destroy the planet for humans. So yes, we would all be living a very different life (If we survive), as nuclear fallout showers the planet. NATO members know this and if they believe Putin is capable of pushing the button, they won't take the step of provoking him futher. Clearly Ukraine is getting beaten since Western rhetoric is ratcheting up.

I don't think 'the world' alignments would change much. Country leaders know the real score, it is just us silly commentators that think it is 'good' vs 'evil'.

If Ukraine loses (and I believe they are going to) then Western nations will just have to take their lumps.
Thats called appeasement. No one in Europe wants to repeat the 1930's. As well as in the USA. Appeasement is weakness. Which Dictators will keep pushing.

Russia has defeated the entire economic and technological output of NATO countries with the manpower of Ukrainians (1/3 of Russia). Manpower, directly trained in NATO tactics, and operations overseen by NATO military leadership.

Putin's regime have continually threatened nuclear attacks on western nations over the last few years, so everyone is now used to the constant pathetic threats.

As for Ukraine joining NATO it would have to cross a lot of hurdles and be accepted by all NATO members, and it just requires one veto by a NATO member to stop Ukraine from joining.

I would suggest a future US Trump presidency would not entertain the idea of Ukrainian membership, and may even question the very future of US NATO membership.

In terms of French President Macron's recent suggestion that NATO ground forces could be used in Ukraine, that proposal has been firmly rejected by the US, Germany and the UK, so it seems some common sense has prevailed.

Is there a documented case of Russia failing to get their way and not hint darkly at nuclear weapons?

I don't think he's bluffing. Putin views NATO encroachment as an existential threat. That's not a new or controversial statement.

If your options are cease to exist or use whatever means are at your disposal to prevent ceasing to exist, you're going to take option 2, every time.

Perhaps, this may slow down the migrant surge across the southern US border. No one wants to cross into a potential wasteland.

In all seriousness, with respect to the Ukraine’s NATO status and Russia’s threat, our leadership was well aware of this situation potentially presenting itself when dealing with Ukraine. It is what it is, as usual.

There's usually some sort of menacing threat, but any use of nuclear weapons by Russia would be the end of Russia itself, and Putin and his cronies are not that stupid.

He did not imply Russia would nuke the west first. Just that if Ukraine was given entry into NATO, that would not deter Russia from attacking it, forcing NATO nations to invoke article 5, which would then put NATO troops in direct conflict with Russian ones, and one where inevitably nukes would be used.

Putin won’t attack NATO if Ukraine joins. Just like Finland. But NATO isn’t going to admit a country in an active war with Russia, so it doesn’t matter. If there is anything left of Ukraine after this war then maybe it will join, though I’d personally oppose that.
