I don't disagree, but as my referenced link says, those recently encountered by fighter jets were shot down. I'm just wondering why this one wasn't. Likely much more to the story than we've read.
Maybe after shooting down a few balloons, only to realize they were actually just hobbyist balloons, NORAD and the Air Force learned how to identify hobbyist balloons from more potentially serious threats.

The mental gymnastics to explain this. Imagine a righty coming up with unlikely scenarios based on no evidence. It would/is a bloodbath of "CONSPIRACY THEORIST!"

You wondered, "I'm just wondering why this one wasn't." I gave a possible explanation, which was even prefaced with the qualifier "maybe." That you're attacking me for offering a possible explanation for your wondering, only goes to show you're looking for reasons to attack me.

No, I just have seen many posts where a person on the right says "maybe" and is attacked.
It is too big for a weather balloon. They are fairly small, like 6 or 8 feet and only expand to like 20 feet. 50 feet is way too big. This is just China playing games again.
This article says that just before bursting, weather balloons get to about 30 feet. But that's at around 100,000 feet where there is essentially no external pressure. It would likely not be approaching 30 feet at 40,000 feet, but you are correct - they don't get as large as 50 feet. Of course, was the 50 feet reported just a guess, or did they actually measure it?
