WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court on Wednesday reduced what had once been a $5 billion punitive damages award against Exxon Mobil to about $500 million. The ruling essentially concluded a legal saga that started when the Exxon Valdez, a supertanker, struck a reef and spilled 11 million gallons of crude oil into the Prince William Sound in Alaska in 1989.

Do you EVER have a posting made on anything other then emotions?

People who lost their "livelihoods" have already been compensated, this is PUNITIVE damages, in addition to ACTUAL damages that was previously paid out.

No, I believe these justices spoke clearly when they said that those who lost their livelihoods were entitled to $15,000. Yeah, that's fair. I guess it's now cost effective to be reckless, thanks to lawyers dragging this out for nearly 20 yrs, and especially to supreme court.

I think Exxon should have paid more out for damages and less in punitive costs.

lol....true.

those treehuggers so hell bent against EXXON should actually do some reading about how much was really paid out already.

however, if they did, they might end up being embarrassed.

Yeah, mga, all of those animals (birds/waterlife) died for nothing.
The tanker captain was DRUNK.
He destroyed a major part of the ecosystem.
Is that really acceptable behavior?
