Our 5th grade teacher got us fired up about the 1976 election, and we voted just for fun in a classroom election, I voted for Ford but Carter won in the class and real election. I remember that night staying up to see who won, but falling asleep. It was so close that it took all night to declare a winner. I remember waking up disappointed to hear Carter won. My first political defeat at the ballot box, my heart sunk.
If you look at an election map of '76, you might be surprised at how Carter could of won. Ford won every western state, as well as Iowa, Illinois, Michigan, Indiana, Virginia, New Jersey and four other eastern states. But if I had to do it over, I would of voted for Carter in '76 and would of dumped him in '80 for Reagan. When I was a kid, I don't remember Ford telling us "There is no problem or threat with soviet domination in Poland", later he corrected himself, but what a stupid error. Ford also fired Butterfield and that ticks me off too.
I don't think Ford would of done any better than Carter from '76 to '80. Ford was a walking accident waiting to happen. Carter was not great for that time peroid either, but at least I can envision a man like Carter being a great president in the 60's or 90's when the ecomomy was in good shape. I've noticed that sometimes history calls for a dove and we get a hawk instead, or vice versa.

I was born in 81, but if I were alive in 76, and couldn't see the next four years, I probably would have voted for carter. Personally I like the man, his folksy-outsiderness would have appealed to me, especially after the awful times of the 60s and 70s.
I think this election mirrors 1976 exactly. A mediocre economy, winding down an unpopular war, an unpopular GOP brand with a lukewarm candidate, and a fresh face from the Democrats. Strange how history repeats itself.
I voted for Carter because he was a decent man and a good president. I voted for Carter in both elections because I thought that Ford was a pre-bought by the business community and I saw through Raygun’s “morning in America” nonsense.
I figured Carter would keep the warmongers in their cage and Raygun never met a military contractor he wouldn’t bend over for. Raygun was a professional liar (actor) that started the deficit spending that is about to destroy the remnants of our economy. Raygun proved to not be either a decent man or a good president.

I'll bet you can't make a point about McCain without calling him McSame, too. Name-calling is a tactic of last resort, when all other options are exhausted and you can't argue your position any other way.
History has and will prove you wrong. Reagan broke the back of the Soviet Union. For that, he will be remembered as one of the great presidents. You're free to disagree, of course. That's what this country is all about.
Americans, for generations, wrung their hadns and lamented "If only we had an honest poplitician!" Well, with Carter, we had one---and couldn't wait to get rid of him. And the most dishonest policians in history have all been the ones after Carter. How many of you ish Reagan or Bush-41 or Clinton was in the Wbite Hluse right now?
