C-Ders,

I am thrilled that this subforum is so active, it means people are genuinely concerned and care about this great country.

As the views and politics on this forum vary greatly, it would be interesting to see who was your favorite US President in your lifetime and why. No Abraham Lincoln or John Adams, unless you lived during their terms. Who is the President you think, "if only President X could have served a few more terms", or "I wish President X was here to fix this mess'".

No Obama or McCain answers.

Just wax eloquently on who was great in your lifetime, and why.

I personally would have to pick President Reagan. He took a country that was an international embarrassment and an economy that was a bit sluggish and turn things around. I know a lot of folks hated Reaganomics but even my Dad who supports Obama this time around says he wishes Reagan was back so he could fix things.

Bill Clinton turned around a sluggish economy handed down by a Bush, so I guess I'd go for him.

If I was Hillary's advisor I just would have run 1 ad: Yogi Berra saying "its deja vu all over again", a Clinton will solve the economic problems handed down by a Bush.

Franklin Delano Roosevelt. He led our country out of a depression and through the second world war, and transformed America from a country in decline to the home of the longest period of shared prosperity in the history of the world.

Reagan. He inherited a recession whereas Clinton inherited an economy that was already growing.
Reagan also took the Soviet Union and communism seriously and fought against it.

Jefferson for his brilliance, elegance and creativity, and his Monticello and FDR for his institution of the WPA which created and left behind lasting monuments of artistry in lodges in our national parks, trails, books, murals and other incredible works of beauty for all of us to enjoy. This program let loose the best of our artists in all mediums to create beauty for all of us, even today. He lit a light in the midst of a gray, gloomy time.

If you've ever been fortunate enough to visit the Ahwanee Lodge in Yosemite, California or the Timberline Lodge in Mt. Hood, Oregon, you know what I mean--the carvings, weavings, furniture, stone masonry are a tribute to the magic of our country's crafts men and women...

I'm trying to think, and failing, to recall other lasting beauty left behind by other presidents...

Reagan, a class act, and never a disgrace and embarrassment like Clinton.

Oh, sorry, the two mentioned above by me were not in my lifetime. I guess I'd cast my vote for Jimmy Carter--he's my idea of a man who tried his best to do good for us, and even better, he continues to do good after his presidency through his peace-making and negotiation skills. Seems to me, he and Roslyn have true compassion for their fellow humans with whom they're sharing the journey...he left the White House a poor man, maybe he didn't have his hand in the cookie jar, either...
