Quoting Obama:
"And we're going to grow our Foreign Service, open consulates that have been shuttered and double the size of the Peace Corps by 2011 to renew our diplomacy. We cannot continue to rely only on our military in order to achieve the national security objectives that we've set. We've got to have a civilian national security force that's just as powerful, just as strong, just as well-funded."

I'm all for strengthening our foreign service.
What's wrong with civic activism and service--isn't that's what our often-invoked founding fathers were all about? We've got ROTC, can't we branch out a bit?

Anyway, have a look at this:
We want to be a Nation that serves goals larger than self. We have been offered a unique opportunity, and we must not let this moment pass.

My call tonight is for every American to commit at least two years, 4,000 hours over the rest of your lifetime, to the service of your neighbors and your nation.

Many are already serving and I thank you. If you aren't sure how to help, I've got a good place to start. To sustain and extend the best that has emerged in America, I invite you to join the new USA Freedom Corps.

The Freedom Corps will focus on three areas of need: responding in case of crisis at home, rebuilding our communities, and extending American compassion throughout the world. One purpose of the USA Freedom Corps will be homeland security....

Our country also needs citizens working to rebuild our communities. We need mentors to love children, especially children whose parents are in prison, and we need more talented teachers in troubled schools. USA Freedom Corps will expand and improve the good efforts of AmeriCorps .....

And America needs citizens to extend the compassion of our country to every part of the world. So we will renew the promise of the Peace Corps, double its volunteers over the next five years, and ask it to join a new effort to encourage development, and education, and opportunity in the Islamic world.

This time of adversity offers a unique moment of opportunity, a moment we must seize to change our culture. Through the gathering momentum of millions of acts of service and decency and kindness, I know: We can overcome evil with greater good.

It's from George Bush's 2002 State of the Union address.

ServiceNation (http://www.bethechangeinc.org/servicenation?no_splash=1 - broken link) promotes national service.
Some stated goals of this organization:
Engage 1 million Americans in full-time service, leveraging an additional 100 million volunteers each year.

1. Enroll one million Americans annually in a revitalized and expanded AmeriCorps national service program. Create new corps focused on education, public health, disaster relief, and energy conservation.

2. Send 100,000 Americans overseas each year through the Peace Corps, Volunteers for Prosperity and Global Service Fellowships.

3. Engage students in service learning opportunities by expanding Learn and Serve America to reach 3 million students.

4. Engage teenagers in a “Summer of Service” to address problems in their own backyard.
5. Provide opportunities to returning war veterans who want to continue to serve their country through a civilian service opportunity at home or abroad.

6. Make permanent the Citizen Corps and engage 500,000 Americans.

7. Create a new initiative of “Encore Service Careers” for baby-boomers and seniors.

8. Offer new support and performance standards for 400 volunteer centers.
9. Create the permanent National Service Council to play a similar role as the National Security Council and National Economic Council.

Create a Democratic Renewal in our Nation.

10. Establish a U.S. Public Service Academy.

11. Convene new Citizen Congresses.

12. Create regular Youth Constitutional Conventions at the National Constitution Center.

13. Launch a debate about why and how America should become a nation of universal national service by 2020: debating baby bond, lottery draft, new GI Bill, etc.

Well, we'll see what happens.

Wow!

Does anyone else around here feel that something like a "civilian national security force" would quickly devolve into an exercise in Orwellian thought policing, the primary objective being the identification and processing of "hate" criminals and other "domestic terrorists"?
This is incredibly scary IMHO.

I am already going to be serving two years for the Catholic Church in 2011. I don't need someone telling me how I should spend my time.

Obama sounds like the anti-Christ to me. What is he going to do if we don't follow his plans?

Like Gov of California said, McCain spent more time in the torture chambers of enemy prisons than Obama has spent in the Congress. McCain knows the price....Obama wants to disarm us and then we will know the price of Obama's leadership into the world of socialism and totalatarism. Help.

We have a civilian security force. Every one of us is already a member & its why we have a second amendment. All that need be done in reality is to acknowledge existing federal law.
Obama is a manipulative radical socialist pig & if you vote for him you vote for the death of our country. Dont we already have enough problems without a socialist egomaniac?

Thumbs down Re: Nat'l Security Force....members of the ...

NRA....and all those that have GUNS and training for home security .

That is in THEIR HOME SECURITY...

I have also served and am still serving as a vol. FF for over 20 years.

Plus Coast Guard Aux. CAP etc.

We do not need a SS type of program.

What's wrong with the National Guard and getting their ranks up.

NO Way on a CHAIRMAN OBAMA NSF== HuummM SEEMS TO MEAN "NON SUFFICIENT FUNDS"...

Look at the posts from the many Obama fanatics on this forum. The blind hatred they spew. Do we really want a civilian security force made up of such as these?
Hmmmm Is that an American flag you have flying in front of your house??? New order from Obama says that American flags may only be hung below the rainbow flag, and under the civil security force flag. We will need to take your children from you, and you will need to attend the re-education detention center for non-civic minded citizens. Rumor has it that you also own firearms. You will need to hand those over right now....... Under Obama all privately owned firearms are now banned.

A civilian security force sounds like a great idea. The US Armed Forces have reserve soldiers. Aren't they civilians? Having civilians soldiers greatly reduces the cost of maintaining our military while at the same time maintaining the strength we need. This is an idea in the right direction. Israel has an effective military, and it is also based on civilian volunteers. Isn't less big government and more civilian involvement what good government is all about?

Ummm...in a nut shell NO to all of the above. Reserve forces, National guard etc are at the behest of the federal govt and are actually considered members of the US military. A "civilian" security force in the vein being discussed here is little more than an inquisition squad. The "turn in your neighbor for unAmerican and subversive activity" mentallity. It sounds like a secret police made up of blind followers. "Brown Shirts" comes to mind. McCathrthyism at the other end of the spectrum. As another poster said ....the Second Ammendment is there to ensure a ready and able "civilian" defense force that can be drawn on in times of national need. The "militia" as defined by the founding fathers was "every able bodied citizen able to bear arms in defense of the Nation" (yessss I'm paraphrasing but that is the intent).
