The number killed in gun crimes has jumped 40 percent since 2000

WASHINGTON - The number of young black men and teenagers who either killed or were killed in shootings has risen at an alarming rate since 2000, a new study shows.

The study, to be released Monday by criminologists at Northeastern University in Boston, comes as FBI data is showing that murders have leveled off nationwide.

Not sure there is anything surprising about these stats.

Since 2000? I think they are behind by about a decade.

Isn't there supposed to be a mini-boom of young males (of al races) age 18-22 right now? I think I remember from criminology that when there's a glut of young men, the crime goes up....

This is a tragedy.

What are the top 10 cities involved by rate ? Murder perps and murder victims per 100K?
In this case for young black males , clearly the most endangered group.

What's the fix?

You're right.
You're right. And...
You're right.

This shouldn't involve a lot of finger pointing. We need to be seriously asking what can be done to turn this problem around. And frankly, I don't have the answers.

On another thread you suggest "quit making excuses for criminals." Fair answer?

Yes, quit making excuses for black on black crime. While yes, it is THEIR FAULT, it is also a tragedy.

Now... do you have any real answers, or are you just turning into a stalker?

Your first two sentences dont make any sense - could you please explain that first one? - and are almost as creepy as your third.

In the other thread, a poster quoted a wikipedia article's followup on the Jena 6. Four of them have done well so far. The other two might yet turn around. So from that article, it's proved that positive change is possible for some people who start out disadvantaged and get involved in crime.

That's not news. It is common knowledge. Just watch the news.
