Yep, or some drive them because they want to, regardless of whether they can afford it. (Not that that describes me, of course!)

If you want to do a casual observation of who waste the most gas ,you might go to a used car lot, Many luxury cars have that get terrible gas mileage have low miles, while your basic Honda civic has 250,000 miles on them, some times you can do the math and find that fuel usage was the same or the the conservative prolly drove less, young people who drive fuel efficient cars put so many miles on those cars , it negates the benifit of them being so efficient.

Too true. I barely drive my SUV (Hummer). Less than 500 miles a month, and that's including 2-hour trips to L.A. and San Diego every month or two.

The type of automobile you drive does say something about you if you want it to. Many people have an identity or persona that is associated with their cars, to a certain extent.
Well, I suppose that is true, the key phrase being "if you want it to."
I tend to view a car as a tool that has an intended purpose. A hammer pounds nails, it makes no difference what type of wood is used for the handle, it still doesn't do anything besides pound nails or pull them out.

The car hauls people to destinations. That's its purpose. I bought a 4x4 light pickup truck, because I had a two-fold purpose in mind, one that included traveling to and fro to various destinations (which is why I bought a four-cylinder model with a 5-speed manual tranny), and another that included traveling on unimproved trails for various outdoor excursions (which is why I chose a light-weight, short wheelbase, pickup with 4x4).

My previous vehicle was a Saturn SL, also a 4 cylinder, 5-speed, that got 42 miles to the gallon, because at that time in my life, I was commuting 80 miles round trip to work each day.

In either case, I regard the vehicles as a tool with a purpose in mind, not as a status symbol.

I genuinely like to drive. And, we drive a lot (over 40K miles a year).

My vehicles were selected for several reasons - not the least of which was, they are fun to drive, comfortable, have the bells and whistles I want while I enjoy my trip and they fulfill our needs.

Are vehicles tools? Yes. But, they can also be entertainment

It doesn't even have to be a "status symbol". It can just be something you enjoy having. I don't think anyone is a better or worse person because of that.

I'm with you on this. If you're going to spend money on a vehicle, why not enjoy it?

I can't speak for Repub's but I am a CONSERVATIVE and the wife drives my five kids in my Yukon XL and I just love my Deville with its V8 power to push all 4,400 pounds of pure American Luxury around.

What I really enjoy is watching a liberal attempting to merge their Prius onto the freeway with all their hate speech plastered across its bumper about the 04 election and hanging on for dear life when I blast past them with all 270 ponies under the hood of my Caddy snorting as they glower at me....But what is almost as fun is standing my boat up on end consuming gas in copious amounts for no other reason than pleasure with that third big block V8 roaring.....America...what a country!

At least you're honest about the fact that you enjoy being a bully.
