Obama states "we must all collectively sacrifice ..."
What do you think? Should all Americans, regardless of taxable income, have to pay something? This would effectively end EIC and refundable tax credits. Think Minimum Tax.
I feel that all Americans have a responsibility. While I don't advocate a flat tax per se, I see nothing wrong with every American contributing at least something to the cause. Our tax system is progressive. I think the people who actually pay the bills in this country might feel just a little better when the guy that is bitching about his success and calling for a tax increase has at least paid something into the Treasury.
A token or minimum tax seems appropriate to me. I'd be happy with $100 for the lowest income earners, and work up from there.
PS - this is federal income tax. I will ignore all liberal rants about how the poor pay gas taxes, sales taxes, excise taxes, etc.

Why do you want to ignore regressive taxes? Or, perhaps I should ask, do you support "all regressive taxation" as opposed to progressive (income) taxation?

I think a progressive system is fine to an extent. Assume that taxable income up to $10,000 is taxed at a flat 5%, and went up from there. Does that seem fair to you? Does it seem fair that the effective tax rate for many Americans is actually a negative number due to refundable tax credits and the EIC?
Then I cannot vote because I do not believe Americans should be forced to pay taxes if they do not wish to (i.e. income tax).
That is a different matter. Good luck.
