Ever since I observed that scene in Roger and Me, where the rabbit bit the rabbit lady, I've noticed a lot of news stories where animals and marine life seem to be sending a message of contempt towards humans.
Chimpanzee planned stone attacks on zoo visitors - Science, News - The Independent (http://www.independent.co.uk/news/science/chimpanzee-planned-stone-attacks-on--zoo-visitors-1641018.html - broken link)
Ever since I was a kid that was the stereotype of the caged primate throwing whatever, usually poo, at the patrons. Seems like an understandable response for the situation of captivity.
Primates become clinically psychotic in captivity. It is sad that they are forced to live that way just so people can go gawk at them; I refuse to patronize zoos, et al.

I'm with you --- I find zoos to be the most depressing places. I find no enjoyment in them whatsoever. The only worse place would be a circus. Why more circus animals (particularily the tigers and lions) don't snap and kill their handlers I cannot imagine.
I see so many of my neighbors with dogs they claim to love and some keep them in 6'x8" kennels much of the day. I've always told my wife it makes me sad to keep a sentient being you claim to love locked up in a cage smaller than a jail cell we keep nasty criminals in for punishment.
I don't claim to have the solution to this problem (other than not having a dog if you have to kennel them most of the day) but this situation just seems so out of wack to me that it paines me evertime I see it and hear the poor dog barking out of boredom and probably wondering what he did to be punished by being locked up in a small cage all day.
The way many animals are mistreated it's no wonder some of them finally attack humans who have abused them...whether intentionally or by just not understanding and meeting their inherent needs. I've been to zoos over the years and some zoos seem like decent places for some of the animals they have and other zoo's you just walk away so sad for the animals in such a boring, cramped and filthy place where they are denied anything close to their natural habitat.
I do recall over the years though that when reading about some animal or another attacking a human who was taunting or intentionally harming it in some way....thinking to myself that the human got what he/she deserved. The unfortunate thing is the the animal is usually killed for the unpardonable offense of fighting back. Some humans have a depraved sense of right and wrong regarding animals (or anything else actually)....that I can tell you from experience.
I think some animals might be better suited to captivity than others. Some animals need very large spaces to live out their natural desires....perhaps some animals can be successfully kept happy in a non-native environment.
